Yes it is painful to see what is happening in India. Definitely needs to change in the interest of India and her citizens.

i started learning Eng;lish only in 8th grade (first foreign language was Latin). If one needs to become fluent because one goes abroad, it is possible, but most Germans never need English except for a few words in holidays.
Most Indians also would not need English, if higher ecducation were also in English. And imagine the huge amount of energy and time that goes into learning this illogical language could be used otherwise…
if papers need to be translated, translators can do it, like in Europe.

Echoing my thoughts below:

We are bringing up in India, generation after generation that grows up with an inferiority complex just because it cannot speak/read an alien language – English.

Imagine the plight of a majority of our population that cannot get a decent job because of their lack of proficiency in english inspite of them being proficient in their respective mother tongues.

Plight of the ‘non-english’ speaking people and the heights of our (‘english speaking people’) insensitivity can be gauged from the fact that the ‘non-english’ cannot carry out even routine/daily transactions on their own, without the knowledge of english – Electricity Bill, Water Bill, Gas Bill, Mobile transaction SMS, Banking transaction SMS – all are in English!

We fail to see the plight as we are very comfortable in our ‘English’ world and the ‘non-english’ don’t complain as it has been bred into them that its their fault and shortcoming that they don’t know English!

Time and again, in this context, I’m reminded of two people:

1) My mother – A charismatic personality with superb oratorial skills, amazing self confidence and all qualities of a great leader.. She can easily give any intellectual or political leader a run for his/her money (she already gives in many spheres currently) and perhaps amongst the few in this nation with an ability to silence even a belligerent Aranab Goswami. Her only sin (as perceived in India) is that she studied from a Hindi Medium School.

2) My Factory Manager – a man of great integrity, managerial ability and leadership skills. Would be earning salary in lakhs in any top corporate if only he’d learnt english! And here, at my factory, he is earning 1/10 th of his potential salary only because he can’t speak/read english.

The moot question is who loses more in such cases – the individual or the nation?

In my concerted view, the loss is more of the nation than of the individual as the nation completely loses out on the amazing potential of a vast majority of its population (85% as per the article referred).
