This was a question on Quora to which I replied the following:

I doubt that you are a born Hindu. It sounds as if you want to ‘encourage’ other Hindus to reflect if “multiple gods work for them’…

And if you are indeed a Hindu, you obviously don’t know the basics of your tradition. Your tradition claims that all this temporary multiplicity is like many waves on the one ocean, or is like the multiple pictures of a movie on one screen. All is permeated by the eternal Brahman or Paramatman – Satchitananda or blissful consciousness. Names don’t matter, because Brahman doesn’t fit into words or thoughts.
And yes, not only humans, the Devas, and other beings too, are permeated by Brahman and are ultimately nothing but Brahman, like the waves are one with the ocean.

Even the CIA admitted in a 2016 declassified document on cultural trends that “the religion (Hinduism) has a sophisticated philosophical and ethical system, called Vedanta based on the Upanishad section of the four Vedas.”

Compared to Hindu philosophy, the theology of the Abrahamic religions has no solid basis. Their ONE God is separate from his creation. You must NOT claim that you are one with the Divine. It is declared heresy.
Obviously, their God is part of the multiplicity, of Maya in Hindu terms or of the virtual reality in modern terms. Moreover, how can the topmost power in this universe be biased against the majority of humans and send them eternally to hell? Only because they don’t believe in one particular person or one particular book?
But if a Christian, Muslim or Jew has intense bhakti (devotion) towards God/Allah/Yahwe, it will reach the one true Source beyond Maya and he can realise oneness with the Divine. It happened to some. But they were excommunicated (like Meister Eckhart) or even executed, like the Sufi Mansur Al Hallaj who famously declared Ana al haq (I am the Truth/God).
In Hinduism, people who realised their oneness with the Divine are venerated.

Think, reflect and don’t try to be clever…

Hindus are common-sensical people and do NOT believe that the Supreme Being (God) loves only a certain group of people and considers all others as inferior and even sends them eternally to hell, if they don’t join that ‘certain’ group(s).

Another point which is special and probably most important:

Hindus believe that the Supreme Being (Brahman/ SatChitAnanda) is formless yet it sustains and permeates all forms. It means that the Supreme is within all of us.

To claim that the human being is one with the Supreme Being is not allowed in the Abrahamic religions.

Yet if one reflects deeply this makes sense and it also can be realized as true.

If people would reflect deeply on these points, those who are not Hindus, might want to become Hindus…

थोड़ी असहज सी शांति छा गई. कुछ देर बाद एक लड़की ने कहा “हिंदू बहुत सारे भगवानों / देवताओं को पूजते हैं “. मैंने पूछा, किसने बनाए इतने सारे भगवान / देवता? अब सन्नाटा छा गया. किसी ने कोई उत्तर प्रेषित नहीं किया.

“क्या आप में से किसी ने ब्रह्म् के विषय में सुना है?” मैंने पूछा। “मेरा मतलब स्रष्टा के रचयिता भगवान ब्रह्मा से नहीं है, अपितु उस परम सत्य ब्रह्म् से है, जो इस व्यक्त संसार का आधारभूत एकत्व है।“

उनमे से किसी ने भी ब्रह्म् के बारे मे नही सुना था।

मैं इस बात पर विश्वास ही नहीं कर पा रही थी। ऐसा कैसे हुआ कि विश्व के सर्वोच्च दर्शन शास्त्र, जिसे पुरातन ऋषिगण ने खोजा था और वेदों में बताया था, उस को भारत की आने वाली पीढ़ियों को ना बताया जाए, जबकि जर्मन दार्शनिक और वैज्ञानिकों ने इसकी गगनचुंबी प्रशंसा करी थी जब यह ज्ञान कुछ शताब्दी पहले पहली बार यूरोप पहुंचा था.

तब से मैं जब भी जवान लोगों से मिलती हूं और बातचीत करने का कोई मौका आता है तो में हमेशा यह प्रश्न पूछती हूं – “क्या आप मुझे बता सकते हैं कि हिन्दुइस्म क्या है?”

अभी तक मुझे भारतीय ज्ञान के मूल आधार कोई नहीं बता पाया. ऐसा लगता है कि जैसे भारतीयों को यह मालूम ही नहीं होना चाहिए कि उनके संस्कार मे एक ऊंचा स्तर है जो इस संसार की विविधता से ऊपर है। एक स्तर जो शब्द जाल और विचार से ऊंचा है। अद्वैत है! दो नहीं, एक है। और यही भारतीय ज्ञान परंपरा को बाद में आने वाली अन्य परंपराओं से अलग करता है।

भारतीयों को उनके ऋषि गण की प्रदत्त श्रेष्ठतम ज्ञान प्रणाली भुला कर, यह बाद में आयी हुईं परम्परायें यह भ्रम फैलाती हैं कि वो, ना कि भारतीय ऋषि गण, इस सृष्टि को अधिक अच्छे तरह से जानते और बताते हैं. इस संसार के लिए कई बनानेवाले तो नहीं हो सकते. केवल एक सर्वशक्तिशाली शक्तिमान ही होना है. और ईसाई मत और इस्लाम दोनों ही यह बड़ा जोर देकर कहते हैं कि वो एक भगवान की ही पूजा करते हैं, जबकि हिंदू बहुत सारे भगवानों की पूजा करते हैं. और इस कारणवश उनका मत या मजहब ज्यादा सच्चा है और केवल ही सत्य है.

और वो इस झूट को फैलाने में कामयाब होते हैं क्यूंकि अधिकतर हिन्दुओं को अब अपने धर्म और परंपराओं का ज्ञान ही नहीं है. हिन्दू इतना कह कर की “बहुत सारे भगवानों की पूजा करने में क्या गलत है”.

बेशक, कई देवताओं की पूजा करने में कुछ भी गलत नहीं है। यह तो बड़ा तर्क संगत है चूंकि इस दुनिया में अद्भुत विविधता है, इसलिए अलग-अलग देवताओं द्वारा देखभाल के लिए अलग-अलग ‘विभाग’ हैं।

लेकिन अगर हिंदू यह नहीं जानते कि ये विभिन्न देवता एक ही ब्रह्म में एक हैं, तो मिशनरी उन्हें समझा सकते हैं कि ईसाईयत और इस्लाम अधिक उचित हैं। स्रोत एक होना चाहिए, और एक है।

यदि हिंदू अपनी परंपरा को जानते, तो वे आसानी से दिखा सकते हैं कि हिंदू धर्म ईसाईयत और इस्लाम से बेहतर क्यों है, क्योंकि यह सच्चाई के अधिक करीब है।

कैसे?

ईसाईयत और इस्लाम यह दावा करते हैं कि संसार बनाने वाला अपनी कृति से अलग है और किसी को भी यह दावा करने का अधिकार नहीं है कि वो भगवान से एक है (ईसाईयत जीसस के लिए रियायत देता है और उन्हें भगवान मानता है).

इसके अलावा, इस ईश्वर की पसंद और नापसंद है, और वह इसे पसंद नहीं करता है, जब लोग उस बात का पालन नहीं करते हैं जो उसने एक व्यक्ति को बताई थी और जो एक किताब में निहित है – ईसाई धर्म के मामले में यह एक व्यक्ति यीशु मसीह है और किताब बाइबिल है, और इस्लाम के मामले में, व्यक्ति पैगंबर मोहम्मद है और किताब कुरान है। वास्तव में, महान ईश्वर न केवल इसे पसंद नहीं करता, बल्कि उन अविश्वासियों को केवल एक जीवन के बाद, अनंत काल के लिए नरक में भेज देगा।

यह बहुत असंभावित लगता है, है ना?

अब तुलना करें कि हिंदू धर्म क्या कहता है:

हर चीज़ का एक ही कारण एक ब्रह्म है जिसे आनंदमय, अनंत, शुद्ध (= विचार-मुक्त) जागरूकता के रूप में सबसे अच्छा वर्णित किया गया है।

उसमें से या यों कहें कि उसके भीतर, उसकी सहज शक्ति (शक्ति) के कारण, इस ब्रह्मांड की बहुलता प्रकट होती है।

फिर भी यह अनेकता ब्रह्म से पृथक नहीं है। यह एक महासागर की लहरों की तरह है। सभी लहरें सागर के अलावा और कुछ नहीं हैं। जब एक लहर ख़त्म हो जाती है तो कुछ भी नहीं खोता है।

पर हम कैसे जानें कि जाने की यह सत्य के अधिक निकट है?

क्या यह संभव है कि भगवान किसी स्वर्ग में हो (वो स्वर्ग कहाँ है?) ओर यह संसार उनसे अलग, स्वतंत्र, है? अब तो विज्ञान भी इस निष्कर्ष पर पहुंच गया है कि सब एक है। कुछ भी अलग नहीं है. सब आपस में जुड़ा हुआ है.

परंतु ऋषियों का ज्ञान केवल सैद्धांतिक नहीं है। यह व्यावहारिक है. इसे कोई भी अनुभव कर सकता है और इसका अनुभव करना चाहिए. चेतना, सच्चिदानंद कहीं ऊपर किसी स्वर्ग में नहीं है, यह तो हम सब में है, हमारा सार है। ऋषियों ने इसका अनुभव किया और वे हमें संकेत देते हैं कि हम भी इसका अनुभव कैसे कर सकते हैं।

एक महत्पूर् संकेत है कि अपने विचारों को शांत करना आवश्यक है. कारण सीधा साधा है. विचारों के जंजाल के पीछे या परे सच्चिदानंद है. जब हमारे विचारों की गति शांत हो जाती है तब हम उस परम आनंद की स्तिथि को छू सकते हैं.

जीवन का उद्देश्य यह जानना है कि हम वास्तविक रूप से क्या हैँ और वहीं हमारे जीवन का पूर्णत्व है. हम एक बड़ी दुनिया में एक छोटे व्यक्ति नहीं हैं, बल्कि हम तो सच्चिदानंद है.

जीवन का उद्देश्य मृत्यु का इंतजार करना नहीं है इस उम्मीद में की मरने के बाद स्वर्ग जाएंगे- क्यूंकि हम सारी जिंदगी एक पुस्तक पर अंधविश्वास करते रहे.
