This was a question on Quora.

Let’s analyze:

An Atheist is usually defined as someone who does not believe in God.

Now of course ‘God’ needs to be defined. In the Abrahamic religions, God stands for a personal God who is separate from human beings. In Judaism, Yahweh declared Jews as his chosen people. In Christianity, God the Father sent his son to earth to save humanity. And in Islam, Allah sent the last and final prophet, Mohammed.

Now in India, a personal God is not considered the Ultimate. In India, the Ultimate, is all pervading, not personal. It is called Brahman, Paramatman or simply Tat (That). It is form and nameless. It is the life, awareness and true Beingness of everything. It is That, what is unchanging in midst of this changing universe.

Science discovered the one energy underlying every appearance. India’s wisdom had discovered that this energy is conscious and blissful (SatChitAnanda).

Now, Brahman cannot be grasped by the mind, but since it is our essence, it can be felt, and be realized as real. To be able to realise it, the scriptures, like the Bhagavad Gita, give methods, like jnana or bhakti or karma yoga.

Here comes in the personal God. To feel love (bhakti) for That, which is formless and invisible, it is helpful to direct it towards a form and name, which acts like an access point, i.e. Shiva, Devi, Krishna, Ram, Ganesh, etc…

In Hinduism you need not have an Ishta deva. You can do Jnana Yoga (trying to get to the one truth by enquiry of ‘who am I?’) and many more paths are there. You are basically a Hindu when you acknowledge that there is a conscious basis to that universe, including your own person, that is immanent and beyond. And of course it makes sense to try to connect to that, more so, since the Rishis claim it is possible…

Unfortunately, in the West, the Hindu concepts are not known. So, when people lose faith in Christianity, they reject also ‘God’. They do not know that the personal God, who loves some and doesn’t love others, is not the real, ultimate truth.

This was a question on Quora to which I replied the following:

I was baptized as a Christian (Catholic) in Germany when I was only 3 days old, but if somebody asks me whether I am Christian, I reply that I am Hindu though I did not do any ritual to ‘become’ Hindu.

Conversion means to change into some other state. Christianity and Islam do it big time. They force perfectly normal human beings into blindly believing some unverifiable dogmas that do not add to their spiritual wellbeing.

For example, even as children they are told to believe that the Supreme Power loves only them and it does not those others who don’t sign up to their brand of belief.

Such belief is not natural. It has no basis. But since it is being repeated from childhood on and all others around also seem to believe it, it is taken as truth by the majority who don’t want to think about “what we anyway can’t know”. This attitude that man need not even try to think about what is true, as he can never know, is also bandied about as truth in Christianity and Islam.

To become a normal human being again means to lose faith in these dogmas and start thinking for yourself. It is rather a de-conversion.

And to become a Hindu means when you come to conclusions about the truth which are in tune with the ancient Indian rishis.

The most notable conclusion of all: your consciousness (Atma, Self) is one with the One Consciousness (Brahman) that is the essence of all that is -visible and invisible. You are not what you think you are. You are not a separate, unconnected body and mind.

Now this belief is not blind. It can be verified provided you are ready to follow some rules which is called sadhana.

One can compare it with the following ‘belief’. Let’s say you live in Delhi and you have never seen the ocean. If somebody tells you that if you continue to travel south you will reach a vast expanse of water, so vast as you have never seen in your whole life, you may not believe it. You may even denounce this person as a fraud if not worse.

But suppose you believe him and travel, you will realise that it was true what he said.

Similarly, the wisdom of the Rishis can be made one’s own. One can realise the Divinity within.

This realisation is not limited to people living in India. It happened also to persons (though rarer) who lived in a Christian or Muslim environment.

However, the difference is that, while in India such persons are revered, in Christianity and Islam such persons live in danger. There are examples that they were even killed or excommunicated.

The highest goal of the Rishis – realising one’s oneness with the Divine- is considered heresy in those dogmatic religions.

It of course also means that all religions are NOT the same.

There are different criteria on which one could compare those 3 religions. I want to focus here only on the most important criterium: which one of the three religions is closest to truth.

Christianity claims that the full truth has been revealed 2000 years ago only to Jesus Christ by the one Supreme Being (called God in English), and therefore truth is only with his Church. All must become Christians and follow what Christ said, if they want to be saved from hell.

Islam claims that the final truth has been revealed some 1400 years ago to Prophet Mohamed by the one Supreme Being (called Allah in Islam) and therefore Islam is the only true religion. All must become Muslims and follow what Prophet Mohamed said, if they want to be saved from hell.

Isn’t it strange that even in the 21st century those unsubstantiated claims about eternal hell for “others” are not debated and dismissed as superstition?
Further, obviously at least one of those religions can’t be true, if not both – so why nobody mentions this? Yet instead of a debate on what is true, the “right to freedom of belief” is protected. It’s surely strange.

Now where does Hinduism stand?
It usually is seen as inferior to the two big, established, ‘respected’, rich religions. And if one goes by common perception, Hinduism is mainly about caste system, sati and worshipping many gods, which (idol worship) is the greatest sin in both Christianity and Islam, because the Christian God and Allah are claimed to be jealous of other gods.

Hinduism is a rather new term. It was introduced by the British for the ancient traditions in India based on the Vedic texts.

Why was Hinduism introduced? Today’s ‘Indians’ were called Hindus earlier and even today are called Hindu in China. Hinduism would be akin to Germanism or Frenchism.

I got a clue why Hinduism was introduced, when I read that Voltaire, too, among many others in the west, praised the Vedas as the greatest gift to mankind and said “we are eternally indebted to India”. Voltaire fought against the influence of the Church and indeed, when the Vedas reached Europe, it had two effects: the influence of the Church went down and science took off in a big way (intriguingly, it is not mentioned today that those 2 effects could have anything to do with Vedic knowledge reaching the west).

Clearly, the Church was not amused that the intellectual elite preferred Vedic wisdom over Christianity. It needed some strategy to stop losing her sheep.

Now what is contained in the Vedas which are claimed to be as old as the universe?
Veda (it means knowledge) is about what we need to know to live a meaningful, fulfilling life. Vedic knowledge is vast, though most of it has been lost by now. Vedas tell us even about math, the age of the universe, of parallel universes, even the distance to the sun, how to analyze, how to connect with powers (devas) greater than humans, etc.

And most important, the Vedas tell us the truth about us, the Supreme Being and the universe.

The Vedas differs from the two other religions in a major point:

The Vedas claim that Brahman (Supreme Being) has become this universe. It means all is permeated by Brahman, including humans. All is essentially divine, we humans included.
The names and forms are not really real. They appear only as real. Brahman alone is real, and Brahman is best described as sat-chit-ananda (blissful awareness). And the Upanishads, which are part of the Vedas, declare “Aham Brahmasmi” (I am Brahman), or “Ayam Atman Brahma”(This Atma is Brahman).

Does this claim make sense? Yes, it does. Quantum physics came meanwhile to the conclusion that all is one energy and that there are no separate entities anywhere. However, the Vedas claim that this one ‘energy’ of science is consciousness. it’s alive, not dead energy. Incidentally, physicists like Schroedinger, Einstein, Heisenberg, etc. drew inspiration from the Vedas. So far, the Vedas were never proven wrong by science whatever was tested.

So the claim, that Brahman is the essence in all, is surely closer to the truth than the claim by Christianity and Islam that the Supreme is separate from his creation, including the human being, and will send all those who don’t believe in a certain book for eternity to hell. The Vedic claim of divinity in humans gives naturally inner strength to a human being and also kindness (as Brahman is in others, too).

Now why was Vedic knowledge suddenly made into a Hinduism, placed next and yet below the 2 big religions and associated from the start with a ‘divisive’ caste system (which is a social issue and prevalent everywhere) and other negatives like sati?

My conclusion is that the Church was afraid it would lose out when people come to know what Vedic knowledge really contains. They would stop blindly believing but go after genuine knowledge which is there in the Vedas.

That’s why they had to coin a new term and demean “Hinduism” in the eyes of common people right from the start. They were successful. Everywhere children learnt in schools about the ‘terrible caste system’ in Hinduism. People didn’t ask further. They *knew* now that Hinduism is greatly inferior to the two big religions.

Yet there is always the fear that people may discover that they were deceived for the sake of power and that truth may be different from what they were taught in religious class.

In Germany, there is a saying which shows that the common folk was skeptical and wiser than the rulers imagined. it goes like this:

“The King says to the Pope: “Your job is to make the people stupid and I make them poor.”

By Maria Wirth

PS: Since my book “Thank you India- a German woman’s journey to the wisdom of Yoga”, published in Nov 2018 with 45 chapters in 313 pages, got very good reviews, but hardly anyone knows about the book, I would like to let you know that it is available under the below link of the publisher for Rs 349. It’s also available on Amazon.in (they charge more). On amazon.com only the Kindle version is available.
