Some time ago, a news item caught my attention: Dalit Christians had filed a complaint with the United Nations against the Vatican because of caste based discrimination of the Catholic Church in India. The complaint was filed with the UN Information Centre at New Delhi.
It made me feel that a suggestion I had made in an earlier article was maybe not so outlandish and actually worthwhile. I had suggested that Hindus, Buddhists and others could file a complaint with the UN against Christianity and Islam, because Christianity considers non-Christians as heathen and Islam non-Muslims as infidels, and both these religions claim that heathen and infidels are unworthy of the grace of the Supreme Power and will be thrown into hellfire where they will suffer excruciating pain for all eternity. “Idol-worshippers” – Hindus are labeled as such – are the worst of the lot in the eyes of those religions.
In the Bible, Mathew (13: 49/50) states:
“ This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
The Quran gives a more detailed description of the torture that awaits infidels:
“But as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them, boiling fluid will be poured down their heads. Whereby that which is in their bellies, and their skins too, will be melted; And for them are hooked rods of iron. Whenever, in their anguish, they would go forth from thence they are driven back therein and (it is said unto them): Taste the doom of burning” (Quran 22:19-22)
Hindus generally have no malice towards other faiths and don’t expect others to have malice towards their own faith. They readily pay respect to Bible and Christianity or to Quran and Islam without knowing what they contain. Usually they don’t even notice that their respect is not reciprocated.
However, there are also those who know the content, but prefer to ignore unacceptable passages. One reason may be that they of course don’t take them seriously and can’t imagine that anybody takes them seriously. Unfortunately, they underestimate the power of indoctrination, especially in childhood. It is not only the ISIS types who believe (and act on it). I know from own experience that children believe what they are told and many don’t question this belief even as adults.
Another reason may be that they don’t want to draw attention to those divisive, discriminating passages in books that are considered holy by the majority of the world’s population. They fear they could remind ‘believers’ of their duty to fight the “unbelievers” or rather the “wrong believers” as Hindus are great believers in the Supreme and certainly not unbelievers.
However, this attitude won’t work today, as the content of Quran, Bible and other scriptures is readily available on the net. It is easy to access any verse of the Bible or Quran. ISIS spread their views on the internet. The radicalization among Muslim youth often happens via the net. A cleric in a German mosque who had banned radicalized youth and declared ISIS as un-Islamic was described as an “old, confused man”, by a German Turk, who ‘knew’ that ISIS is following the Quran. How did he know? “I and my friends have read the Quran”, he declared. His friends are fighting for ISIS.
I didn’t make the suggestion to complain to the UN because I expect much action from the UN. I made the suggestion mainly, because in this way the issue would hopefully come into mainstream discourse. People, including Christians and Muslims, need to realize how absurd and divisive this claim of “eternal hell for unbelievers” is.
The gravity of the situation needs to sink in: every second child in the world is taught that Hindus (and others) are not equal in the eyes of the Supreme God, and the child is likely to believe it. In fact, the child is taught that the Supreme hates those others so much that they will burn for all eternity in hellfire if they don’t mend their ways and join the believers on the right path. Sri Krishna, Sri Rama, Sita, the Rishis, Swami Vivekananda, Baba Ramdev, Sri Sri Ravishankar, Mata Amritanandamayi, Narendra Modi, Aishwarya Rai, Sachin Tendulkar… just name them, each and every Hindu who ever lived – none will find mercy with the Highest. They all are thrown into the ‘blazing furnace’.
People need to become aware that prophesizing eternal hell was a strategy to frighten the own followers into submission and to justify using force to either convert or wipe out those who ‘insult the Supreme Power and don’t accept the only truth’. This claim of “hell for unbelievers” is about power and influence and has nothing to do with eternal truth or morality.
If a small, crazy sect would claim that all others will burn in hell, one would understand if nobody takes note of such nonsense. But it is not a small sect that makes this claim. This claim is contained in the doctrines of the two most powerful religious institutions on earth with almost four billion followers. Mercifully, many Christians especially in Europe don’t believe it anymore, but it is part of the Christian dogma.
Is one allowed to call this claim nonsense – in the age of quantum physics where it is known that ultimately all is connected and nothing is separate?
Strangely, Hindus keep quiet. They may hope it goes away. It won’t go away without those who are demeaned in this unacceptable manner putting their foot down. Why should those who benefit from this claim give it up as long as nobody objects?
The Church had once to give in to protests: it lost the power to punish heretics and even had to allow Christians to leave the Church. Ever since, the Church lost many of its flock and the west came out of the Dark Age, but the damage was done nevertheless: arrogance and a feeling of superiority was already ingrained in the people and nature had been divested of its sacredness and still is treated as a slave to be exploited.
The dogmatic religions uprooted people from their pagan societies and made them slowly but surely arrogant, self-righteous and convinced that they are meant to rule the world in the name of their god. Would colonialism in its brutal form have been possible without the mindset that Christians are superior to the native heathen? Would Muslim invasions have been so cruel without the mindset that Allah wants them to smite the necks of infidels till all worship is only for Allah?
Today’s most pressing problem, Islamic terrorism, has its roots in the claim that infidels are rejected by Allah. ISIS, Boko Haram and others consider it their sacred duty to rid the earth of such scum.
Christianity stopped killing heathen but still does great harm in so called ‘unreached areas’ for example in India, where it deceives, threatens and lures people away from their tolerant, inclusive tradition into an arrogant, divisive mindset.
Some followers of Islam still kill. They are called Islamists instead of Muslims. But as long as the Quran contains verses that seem to be exhortations to kill infidels, and no official correction is made that these verses refer only to history, there is insincerity in the claim that they are not Muslims. On one hand we condemn those youth in the strongest terms and on the other, we revere the scripture which they claim to follow.
When Donald Trump declares that he won’t allow Muslims into the USA if he becomes President, he may cater to a populist sentiment among Americans but this is no solution. A better strategy would be to make Muslims disown certain passages in the Quran. At the same time, Christians must be made to disown certain passages in the Bible. Blind belief that the Supreme has revealed the truth only to Jesus or only to Mohammed must be allowed to be questioned without putting one’s life in danger.
The Pope said recently in Africa “Christians and Muslims are brothers”. It sounded more like “Let’s live and let live”. Yet when the Pope was in India, he didn’t make such conciliatory statement. He said “we will plant the cross in Asia”. Why? Did he think the “mild” Hindus won’t object to their own demise? Or did he behave like a bully to put Hindus on the defensive?
If Christianity really had the better truth, it would be okay. But this is not the case. The supremacy that the Church claims has no basis except in blind belief. In the same way, the supremacy that Islam claims has also no basis except in blind belief. Both faiths can’t challenge each other. A debate between Christianity and Islam would go like this:
Christianity: “We alone have the full truth”
Islam: “We alone have the full truth.”
Christianity: “God has revealed the full truth through his son Jesus”
Islam: “Allah has revealed the final truth through Prophet Mohammed.”
Christianity: “All have to worship God, the father, via his son.”
Islam: “All have to worship Allah.”
However, in one point both agree: “Heathen and infidels need to disappear from the earth.”
In contrast, ‘Hinduism seeks to propagate the collective wisdom and inspiration of centuries and has room for all forms of beliefs’ (according to the Supreme Court). It offers a profound philosophy. It can bring to the table the wisdom of the ancient Rishis that has never been disproven. This wisdom points to the absolute truth, which dogmatic religions are ignorant of: Truth is not a belief based on thoughts. It is what we all truly are – thought free, blissful awareness.
One would expect that humanity in the 21st century has outgrown blasphemy laws. This is not the case. Not only is there no pressure on countries that have blasphemy laws to abandon them, but – unbelievable, but true – there are attempts by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to bring the whole world under a blasphemy law.
Several nations, like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, have petitioned the UN to make defamation of Islam a crime. And even President Obama and Hillary Clinton supported a resolution (Istanbul Process 16/18) to curb ‘Islamophobia’. Efforts to go further and ban criticism of Islam are surely still on.
Nations that have a majority Hindu, Buddhist or Atheist population like India, China, Japan, Thailand, etc. could join and not only throw a spammer into these efforts but actively weaken their case by demanding a stop to unacceptable claims. Though “idol-worshipping Hindus” are seen as most despicable, Buddhists, Sikhs, Jains, Atheists also don’t pass muster in the eyes of Christianity and Islam.
It is high that time Hindus woke up. Filing a petition with the UN might make even Christians and Muslims aware that these claims are truly unacceptable and that Hindus are not the scum of this earth and have a right to exist.
UNICEF also should be petitioned that brainwashing of children into hatred for others is made a crime. The video of a child in ISIS land cutting the throat of his teddy bear as practice is horrendous. A lot of noise needs to be made about those petitions. Christianity and Islam must not get away with discrediting Hindu Dharma. Let there be a public discourse on which worldview is closer to the truth, and which religion has a better philosophical basis.
Actually it is so obvious even at a first glance: the choice is between brotherhood of all without any preconditions and fighting each other till all become uniform ‘believers’.
Let’s choose brotherhood of all. And please also include animals…

How boldly you have highlighted the wrong ideologies being propagated by the so-called religious representatives and contractors. May the Almighty lead everyone to the path of Self Knowledge and lead everyone from darkness to light
Out of Judaism 2 preachers born,2000&1400yrs ago, want to win over other,so rubbed their agenda on to the world, that’s the whole suffering we see today
Maria.. You never stop amazing me. That how amazing you are with your word. Your word are like razor blade but still polite and kind. Some time feel If get wound by this blade might be so cool. I love your writing and wish one day I can reach that level. Yeah still only can right on technical topic. Because I think I am still un-mature with my word. Which took me time to grow up. But until that I can inspired by your word. Follow to the rest. So, one day might I can meet you. About this article it is always as awesome like always.
You are truly my guru…
Please visit me http://www.arudh.com
Respects Maria Wirth. A good suggestion needs to be taken seriously to promote tolerance. Hope the day may soon come. You have got us Hindus right when you say..”They (Hindus) readily pay respect to Bible and Christianity or to Quran and Islam without knowing what they contain. Usually they don?t even notice that their respect is not reciprocated.”…absolutely. Supreme soul as all pervasive (in every living being) believed and that is why we worship trees/ mountains equal to good saint. This is the spirit of Hindu Dharma!!
As usual , it enriches to go through ur articles , thanks mam ,respects
Thank you Ma’m for your incisive writing. It cuts through the miasma of confusion and brings clarity to all right thinking people..Yes , perhaps Hinduism is unique in that it propagates ‘Vasudaiva Kutumbakam ‘as a desirable goal.
I am glad that you write about these things. Please continue the good work.
Am I the only one who thinks, I mean, really think?
This is the age of Kaliyug where universal spiritual progression is downward. While it is an excellent idea to speak out as often as one can, against prejudice, bigotry, tyranny and pedantry, one must also take a lot more time in one’s own uplift. We know that reincarnation is the ultimate fate of all souls and that the law of karma dictates what one sows one will reap, no less and no more. With this in mind, the atrocities that evil perpetuates, in the name of religion or no religion, has its values also, for if all souls can be liberated, there will not be enough damaged ones to fill the necessary ingredients of vegetation, animals, birds, insects, bacteria, etc. which is absolutely necessary to sustain human habitation. Compulsion being so, billions will remain brainwashed in whatever they are led to believe and even God cannot change that, so why should I try?
Maria: As usual your article was very well-written and thought-provoking. Your suggestion regarding raising the hell in UN about the discriminatory, divisive, and hateful doctrines of Christianity and Islam is very practical and timely. Can you take leadership n this matter. If it needs some financing, I am willing to support the cause. If you are unwilling or unable to take the initiative, you can find among many of your readers those so inclined.
Bhagawandas Lathi
Why should I try? Dharma, perhaps? Because not denouncing what one feels as unjust amounts to side the injustice? Because a passive attitude towards aggression facilitates aggresors to eat us up? Because when respect is not given freely and naturally it should be demanded? Because taking time in one´s own uplift is not incompatible with contributing to the benefit of society in the way that more suits one´s abilities or tendencies, for instance writing?…. … …
Wonderful eye-opener, Maria. We should give due importance to each thing, and with this article we clearly see how these passages of the sacred books have marked the history for the bad of half of the humankind and creatures, at least. Should not it be denounced?
Maria
You are indeed a messenger of God to uplift humanity from falsehood to the right and sensible living. You are not just supporting the cause of a religion or belief. You are uplifting the cause of humanity. May the Supreme fulfil this cause.
As always, a fantastic, incisive yet politely worded article. This itself displays the real Hinduism – not shying from speaking the truth, yet polite. Satyam Bruyat Priyam Bruyat…
The diversity within Hinduism, and the lack of a collective religious mindset – going to temples and praying at temples is an intensely personal activity – also means that as long as I am not personally impacted and I can practise my dharma, a majority of the Hindus will not take up such activism. This is a blessing as well as a curse against such dogmatic religions which lose no opportunity to collectively bully.
So what we need is a set of intellectual Kshatriyas (I think Rajiv Mehrotra coined this term) who can fight. Not everyone can do it, and I think this war will be more on the social media and public opinion level than on the ground. On a positive light, such bullying and aggression by these abrahamic religions will speed up the creation of this warrior group. RSS and VHP, while they mean well, are not considered intellectual and are very reactive. We need a different approach for the current times.
I REALLY CONGRATULATE Ms.Maria Wirth for her bold article.Yes the ignorance and hollowness of semetic religions are well known.I still wonder their eagerness to take non believers to heaven by converting. Why do they bother about other religions? It all shows their emptiness of understanding humanity.Poor souls !!
Maria Ji Namaste!
Another valuable stone from your divine box! Thanks for enlightening us again and again.
I am slightly differ from your thought process regarding defending Hinduism in terms of complaining in UN, as mentioned by you.
We don?t need a certificate or empirical scientific proof approved by any international scientific body to understand the presence of Hindu Gods. Nor we as Hindus are interested in complaining to the body of such, which is again consisting Christians and Muslims.
?Aakashat patitam toyam, Yadha gachhati saagaram,
Sarva deva namaskara: Keshavam prati gachhati!!?
As you know, it means: Just as every rain drop that falls from the sky flows into the Ocean, in the same way every prayer offered to any Deity flows to the divine cosmic power (Kesava).?
?One may worship or believe in any God. No problem. Even if one does not worship or believe, still it is no problem?.That’s our Hinduism, as you are aware.
We don?t have to spread the message of this God. We don?t have to defend the God. If somebody says badly about our God, we don?t have to get angry or fight for this. A true Hindu believes that God protects us; we don?t have to protect God. So a true Hindu cannot get hurt in the name of God or religion?.?
Please correct me If my feelings on your article is wrong!
Hindus are confused about themselves and ill-informed about other religions, which is why they keep chirping inanities like “all religions are the same”, “all roads lead to God”, “the world is a family”etc. They do not learn from history and therefore forget and forgive even unforgivable and unforgettable cruelty against themselves. They are very gullible and quick to accept as facts what ever untruth the white man tells them about Hindus. For example, they sincerely believe that India was always governed by Varna system till the present times, not realising that the British rulers arbitrarily used the Varna categories for classifying Hindus in 1901 census to divide them politically, while conceding that Varna was a theoretical system, not found in reality. Three censuses had taken place before that and Indians – Hindus, Muslims, Christians – were classified under thousands of Jatis. Almost no one had heard of Varna then. There is no recorded history of India, where a state was run on Varna principles. Even a casual reading of history shows India’s prominent and not so prominent ruling dynasties and empires over thousands of years have not been Kshatriyas but of Shudra origin. And yet, Hindus have blindly and readily accepted the fiction of oppression and exploitation by “upper castes” of shudras and other “lower” castes, fed by the British ruler-historians.
Christianity and Islam, on the other hand, are organised and dogmatic, with every follower clear about the objectives of conquest and conversion, as well as their own superiority. Christians will silence any whimpers of parity or self-assertion coming from Hindus by shouting the magic word “Caste!” and the ignorant, half-witted Hindus will run for cover, most of them saying “we hang our head in shame”, without any understanding of reality.
true, we don’t have to defend God. but we should stand up for truth and when blatant untruth is sold as truth and the goal is to wipe off Hindus from the earth, it is about time to stand up for truth, isn’t it?
it is nto about a certificate from the UN. it just would bring the issue into mainstream discourse. Most people have no idead what their religion postulates, and this includes many Christians (I know) and probably also Muslims, and of course Hindus, too.
the problem is that Hindus have idealistic ideas about the dogmatic religions (maybe still a colonial relict) and don’t realise that they deman, defame Hinduism and in the process hate crime can spring up.
we keep saying, the dogmatic religions have to reform themselves from inside.
why not help them a bit?? being nice can become being foolish in certain circumstances.
Let me respond to Maria ji and Satchidanand as well.
First Maria ji.
The very idea of practicing Sanatana Dharma is Brahma Gnanam which is in other word called self realization. Sanatana Dharma never tells to defend the religion nor it says to attack by force the other religion if they try to malign Sanatana Dharma. You try to purify yourself with prescribed practice and preach to those who are interested in this and come voluntarily. Hence be on our Dharma Anustaana which itself take care of protection of our Dharma.
@ Mr. Satchidananda:
DHARMO RAKSHATI RAKSHITAH – Protect Dharma by practice and preach, but not fight for it, like other religions, is the bottom line. If every one practices this Dharma as it is supposed to be, then our Dharma will take care of the rest. Let’s concentrate on this.
If your house is stronger, no thief can enter. Let’s make our people stronger and united, that will enough to protect our Dharma. Why do we waste our time in slender religions? One who think himself, is miser and one thinks of World Welfare, is divine. We, still say, “wishwam mangalam bhuyat’. We were divine and will remain divine for ever.
‘@balaji690, thank you for your observations.
I wish to, however, respectfully differ, when you say that you can preach and practice Dharma, but not fight for it! How do you protect Dharma without fighting for it, when it becomes necessary? This is even contrary to the core message of Gita, where Krishn urges Arjun to fight for Dharma, even if it meant killing his own relatives! You cannot protect Dharma, lying on your bed and dreaming happy thoughts for all humanity, because Adharma is waiting to pounce when you stop actively protecting Dharma, even at the cost of your life! There is no choice in this matter. That is what the shloka you have quoted means:You have to protect Dharma, for Dharma to protect you: Dharma protected, protects! The meaning is clear from the full shloka: Dharm Eva Hato Hanti, Dharmo Rakshati Rakshitah! Tasmay~Dharmo Na Hantavyo, Ma No Dharmo Hato~Vadhit!!
There you are Mr. Sachidanand. Let me explain the full Sloka you mentioned for the benefit of others:
“Dharma protects its protectors. Those that abide by dharma, will always be protected and taken care of. Like a mother protects her child, like a bear protects her cubs, dharma takes care of those, that care to take care of dharma”.
Hence, be on your job of protecting dharma by following the anustaana and the fruit of your anustaana will protect dharma that you follow from the destroyers. So it is clear that dharma only destroys (those) that destroy it.
Your example of Mahabharata Yudha is absolutely inappropriate here as this war was between cousin brothers for the sake of Kingdom and was not a religious fight. The ‘Dharma’ here to fight against cousin brothers, gurus and other relatives, is his ‘Duty’ but not ‘Religion’. For example, taking care of old parents is the dharma of son; extending service to the husband is the dharma to one ‘s wife. Please don’t confuse with the meaning.
Finally, Hindus are not impotent; nor they are afraid of wars. Recall Ashoka, Kanishka, Harshavardhana and Chola, they were great kings of their period, you do accept it. Avoiding conflict does not mean afraid of wars. Hindus by nature, lovers of peace and at the same time, if their patience tested, they know how to retaliate!
Sarvam Krushnaarpanam!
‘@balaji690, the verse from Manusmriti (8-15) is usually translated to mean ” Dharma indeed destroys (those) that destroy it. Dharma protects those that protect it. Hence, Dharma must not be destroyed, lest it destroy us”. There is no reference to mother/child or bear/cub that you have inserted in your translation. Please be very careful about what you share as the meaning “for the benefit of others”, because people are poorly informed about our texts, do not know Sanskrit and are gullible enough to accept anything presented, in good faith.
Dharma is more than just anushthan. In fact, you can have Dharma without anushthan, although anushthan may help, is it enough? By your example, Arjun should have been doing some japa in the battle field, rather than fighting. Mahabharat is all about a war for protection of Dharma, not for a kingdom.
Incidentally, all the kings, Ashoka, Kanishka and Harshavardhan – you have mentioned, quite unnecessarily in my opinion, as examples of potent Hindus, were Buddhists.
Finally, please stop this sabre rattling, political talk of Hindus knowing how to retaliate if their patience is tested etc. Instead, we have to be far more concerned that Hindus and humanity should know Dharma, because then they will know what it is that they have to protect and why they have to protect it.
Dear Maria,
I have always wondered why God would send his son and his messenger to certain part of the world, to certain people, whereas the Great Divine walked this land called India and said “I am Thee”, not once but many times across Yugas and each time reminded us about our own divinity. Additionally, the The Supreme assured us that whenever there is an imbalance between good and evil, “I shall myself come to rescue you all to restore the delicate balance”. That gives me a slight glimpse of the Divine Plan :
1. Consider this, you have 3 children, the eldest one is the most unruly and ill-behaved, never listens to good advice and is an all time trouble maker, a bully and is a violent kid. The second one is a little softer version of the first one, but, nevertheless a problem child. The third one is always curious, always asking questions, listens, ponders, thinks and tries to improve himself. Loves, respects and helps others. How would you, as a parent deal with the 3 children?
Common sense says be a little tough to the first two and encourage the third one! Thats what exactly what The Supreme has done. Now coming back to the context – Looking at the entire world population, based on people’s tendencies and ingrained behaviour, The “Father” decided to send his Messenger and Son to, lets say, make a “decent” man out of them 🙂 . Certainly, The Father would expect the most difficult child to be reminded 4 times a day of severe punishment in case he does not “listen” to Him so and so forth for the second child. Needless to say that all the fear, punishment and divisive verse in the Holy Bible and Quran is meant for their “own faith” and not, never outside their own faith.
Simply put, those who do not follow the word of the Messenger or Son of God are Heathen and Infiedels and shall be punished according to what Father has dictated for their own kind. So, I would say to them – do not look for Heathens and Infiedels outside your own people, y our own faith, look within you and your own fellow followers. You all need the bitter medicinie not those whom your Father has chosed to be more lenient.
2. Now about them waging Holy War/ Jehad against the non-Christians and Non-Muslims : Their God must be a very weak entity that he has to depend upon his followers to set all wrongs right. We Hindus have the assurance of The Supreme and thus true to our very nature do not approve of war. It creates imbalance of every perceivable factor. The great war of Mahabharata taught us that. Moreover, we have “faith” in our “Father”. We understand Newton’s 3rd law as one the manifestation of the Universal Law called Karma. We are doing just fine following our “Way of Life”
3. Thirdly, I do not know how many Heathens and Infidels of their own faith are sitting in their well cushioned chairs of UNICEF, they too have been seasoned well to “Hate” maybe they know how to mask it well rather than their crude counterparts more famously known as ISIS or Boko Haram or Radicals!
It is apparent that there is a great imbalance already in motion, we Hindus can try and wrap up our own small differences and spread the awareness, hoping against hope that someone would see “common sense”. We are the 3rd child of our Great Father, even at the risk for being wiped out of the face of earth, We shall abide by His words, We will respect the Law of Karma, we will look for the divinity in us, the bliss and the supreme knowledge. Takes a bloody good amount of time to be busy with oneself. Let our Father do His Will though us.
Babylon
Excellent Mr.Babylon.We are the 3rd child of our Great Father, even at the risk for being wiped out of the face of earth, We shall abide by His words, We will respect the Law.
‘@ Satchidanand: I regret for my delayed replay!
1. Sir you said, “There is no reference to mother/child or bear/cub that you have inserted in your translation.”
Sir that was an example to understand and I did not claim that mine was precise translation. If I say, “Those two people fought with each other like lions”. So, those two people are lions here?
2. You said, “Please be very careful about what you share as the meaning ?for the benefit of others?, because people are poorly informed about our texts, do not know Sanskrit and are gullible enough to accept anything presented, in good faith”
Sir, I don’t have any intention to mislead the people come here, nor the people who come here are less knowledgeable, as you think. Please under estimate the visitors those who come here.
3. You said, “Dharma is more than just anushthan. In fact, you can have Dharma without anushthan, although anushthan may help, is it enough? By your example, Arjun should have been doing some japa in the battle field, rather than fighting. Mahabharat is all about a war for protection of Dharma, not for a kingdom.
Sir, will you please enlighten me as to how Dharma can be followed with any procedures (Anushthana)? Please also explain me how Dharma (religion) was protected by Pandavas in Mahabharat Yudh? I am very much interested to learn from YOU!
4. You said, “Incidentally, all the kings, Ashoka, Kanishka and Harshavardhan ? you have mentioned, quite unnecessarily in my opinion, as examples of potent Hindus, were Buddhists.”
Sir, I think you need to read again my comments, pertaining to this.
5. You said, “please stop this sabre rattling, political talk of Hindus knowing how to retaliate if their patience is tested etc. Instead, we have to be far more concerned that Hindus and humanity should know Dharma, because then they will know what it is that they have to protect and why they have to protect it.”
Sir, please read my previous comment where I was saying that be on our job of following our Dharma instead of concentrating others. In that scenario, how I you thought that I’m provoking and doing politics. If my sentence gives any such meaning, I will correct myself henceforth!
Shubham Bhuyat!
this is a comment by Manohar Railkar. He asked me to post it for him:
I am very happy to note and put on record the great service that you are doing to my nation and to the Hindu Dharma (not a religion). Persons like me will remain grateful to you forever.
Here is what I feel after reading your recent article. I do not dare call it a comment, but this what I sincerely felt.
I did my college education during 1945-50, from Christian missionary institutions, first three years from the Wilson college in Mumbai, and the last year from the St. Xavier?s college. Although it was not mandatory for us to attend the Bible classes, I did attend some times. But I do not remember anything now, after 65-70 years. So I have no direct knowledge of the contents of the Bible. I do possess a Marathi booklet ????? ??????? (Jesus says)? published the Ramkrishna Math, Nagpur.
Later, I came across a book written by some Bengali person on the Koran. I was shocked when I went through the same and wondered how can a religious book contain such horrible orders, that being my first reaction. Later I got a copy of a small Marathi booklet, Kuran Sar (The Gist of Koran), written by Shree Vinobaji Bhave a great disciple of Gandhiji. It contained nothing of that sort. Possibly, he might have preferred to ignore or avoid those unpleasant verses. No Hindu scripture possess such orders.
I do not know how much you know the Devnagari script, which is common to Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi and even Nepali as well. I also do not know if you have heard of the great Marathi saint Jnaneshwar. His period was the end of the 13th century. He had a life of meagre twenty years (1275-1295), and took Samadhi (no equivalent English word exists), saying that his duty in this world was over and so he must leave it. The place Alandi, where he took Samadhi is very close to Pune, where I stay.
You, perhaps, know that all the original Hindu scriptures are in Sanskrit, which was not the language of masses, Jnaneshwar was the first person to bring, giving the Hindu philosophy as propounded in Bhagavad Geeta, a discourse, in Marathi and made it freely available to the common folk. The work is called Jnaneshwaree, or Bhaavaarth Deepika. He finished this monumental work, in 1290, at the age of 16! This work made several Marathi men and women easily understand the great philosophy and became saints themselves, irrespective of the castes.
The concept ?saint? has a different meaning for the Hindus. They were not supposed to do any miracles and seek sanction/certificate from anyone else. That was happily and with great esteem conferred on them by the public on their own, after knowing their detached behaviour and listening to their poems, usually called Abhang. The effect of Jnaneshwar?s work remained for centuries and continued to produce a long tradition of Marathi saints coming from all casts. To name a few more, Chokha Mela, Narahari Sonar, Banka, Janabai, Tukaram, And Gadage Baba, Gulabrao, Bahinabai, Gondavlekar, in the present days. Jnaneshwar, although a boy not yet twenty is so respected not only by the saints, but by the whole of Maharashtra, that even Chokha Mela, the oldest of saints in his days called him Mauli (Mother of all Yogis). As Prin. Dandekar says, Jnaneshwar Mauli has become a Mantra for Maharashtra.
Printing was not known in those days, so the interested persons used to make hand written copies for themselves. While doing so they made many and many kinds of mistakes, some people even unlawfully inserted their own verses, twisted others and what not. This contaminated, the original work of Jnaneshwar too much. Later, another great person by name Eknath Goswami (1533-1599) hunted for and gathered several such copies, studied them thoroughly and prepared a correct and almost pure version, free of errors and the unlawfully inserted verses. Now I shall tell why I narrated this fairly long piece of history.
Is it likely that in old days, similar things might have taken place with the holy scriptures, Bible and Koran? Who can tell? But I am strongly inclined to think that it might be so. If so and if the learned leaders of the respective religions agree to undertake a similar work of purifying their own scriptures and remove any such unpleasant and defaming verses that are unbecoming for any religious works, from their Holy scriptures they can purify them and help wipe out once and for ever, the unnecessary bitterness, animosity. That will be a step better than complaints which are very likely to be followed by unpleasant compulsions.

‘@balaji690, the basic confusion that you should get rid of is that Dharma is Religion. Dharma is not Religion. Please read the Mahabharata even once, to best understand the subtle concept of Dharma. Otherwise please read the many fine commentaries by Hindu and Buddhist authors on Dharma to better understand it.
There are a few things wrong with Hindus:
1. They believe all religions are just different paths to the same truth. It is because, Hindus are brought up with the philosophy of Buddha, Mahavira and Guru Nanak, which have the same essence as Hinduism and do not believe in “Mine is THE RIGHT RELIGION” nonsense. To us Dharmics, purpose of Dharma is to make life beautiful, not make it hell for the sake of attaining heaven, that no one has come back to tell of.
2. Hindus are not fundamentalists, barring the VHP types, (who are rubbish, who do not know their scriptures and don’t know how to make a positive attempt to defend their religion). Hindus do not necessarily think they need to spread their religion, they think truth will manifest itself if it wants to. Compare that to majority of Muslims and Christians who want whole world to convert to their “TRUE RELIGIONs”. Teaching the Hindu/ Buddhist philosophy for the sake of philosophy is not enough. You need to convert people if you want to keep your religion alive amidst the rabid Abrahamic proselytizers. Proselytizers will always go after the meek (financially and intellectually)
3. Hindus don’t read their scriptures. Only if Hindus read Gita, Bible, Quran would they realize how great their ancestors’ religion is. Abrahamic faiths do not even make 10% sense compared to Dharmic traditions, their only ways of survival are to make brainwash their kids and invest most of their resources on converting people to their religion.
4. Hindus have forgotten the art of debating, Hindus need to debate the Abrahamic faiths, it is the only way you can change the religion of India back to Dharma. Abrahamic faiths will at first look strong, because their way of argumentation is easy, all they speak and depend are the verses from their scriptures. They do not believe in using common sense, after repeated exchanges Dharmic religions will start to make sense. If Dharmaic (Hindu/Buddhist/Sikh/Jain) religions have to see the future, It depends mostly on Hindus and Buddhists to get aggressive on Abrahamic faiths, who will either destroy the whole world, or turn people into atheists.
If all children are brought up without god till 18 and then introduced the concept of God or Reality, most of them, if not all of them will undoubtedly choose Hinduism/Buddhism.
Hindus need concentrated effort, Hindus have to heal the less privileged faith fanatic Abrahamics, If Hindus proselytize, it will heal the world of the suffering caused by Abrahamic faiths.
agree with you that the best course would be to convince those who left Hindu Dharma to come back to the natural state of common sense. though i wouldn’t use the same terms like conversion and proselytizatyion, as these imply that something is sold as truth which possibly cannot be the ultimate truth.
coming back to Hindu Dharma would be more like a de-conversion, or de-brainwashing. getting out of dogmas for which blind belief is necessary.
at least regarding Christians i know that the ‘eternal hell for unbelievers’ is hard to digest even for ‘good’ Christians and many in the west actually deny it is still the doctrine because the priests there don’t mention it anymore for fear of losiing more of their sheep.
this link also gives some points why Hindu Dharma is highly preferable
https://mariawirthblog.wordpress.com/2014/12/28/coming-home-to-intuition-and-reason-from-blind-belief/
“though i wouldn?t use the same terms like conversion and proselytizatyion, as these imply that something is sold as truth which possibly cannot be the ultimate truth”
Conversion has a bad sound, doesn’t it? I never understand why it is not enough to read Christian/Islamic philosophy, they believe even If I practice the philosophy in their scriptures for decades it won’t do me good if I don’t convert. As if saying “I Believing in Jesus as the only savior” or saying “allah is the only god and MMd is his prophet” is better than practicing philosophy of Jesus/Islam. Utter stupidity.
But it is hard to crack open an abrahamic mind, they believe in conversion, even if some follow Hinduism without converting , their next generations will get back to their abrahamic rigidity, given the brainwashing they will undergo. Conversion ends that once and for all. Easy transition(philosophical) without conversion can only happen in free societies like west.
“at least regarding Christians i know that the ?eternal hell for unbelievers? is hard to digest even for ?good? Christians and many in the west actually deny it is still the doctrine because the priests there don?t mention it anymore for fear of losiing more of their sheep.”
Atheism has actually helped people in the west to get back to their senses, and also the increasing influence of Atheism(Dawkins,Hitchens,Harris and co) will sure cut the supply of cash used for missionary activities. I only hope Muslim world becomes socially free and atheistic just like Christian world.
Hindus at least need to make sure people understand what Hinduism is about. Islamic/Christian countries reduce it to Caste, oppression on women and curry. They are either too simple minded to understand or bigoted to even attempt.
Hindus need to make Non-Hindus aware of what Hinduism is about, Hindus need to take some initiative in that direction.
May I take this as an opportunity to request you to make some videos on youtube 😉 (I’m sure you have lot many friends and fans who will assist in that) Appreciate your work on Quora and Twitter.
Thank you, you are an inspiration
‘incisive’ is the word to describe this post!
For the record, a somewhat similar thought was expressed in West bengal in mid-80s, chronicled by the late Sita Ram Goel is his book “The Calcutta Quran Petition”.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Calcutta_Quran_Petition
I’ll make just three points:
1. Don’t quote scripture (of any religion) unless you know what it means.
2. The spiritual messages of scripture can only be presented in figurative language such as allegory, parable, and simile because of the sublime, non-measurable nature of the sacred and the limits of language. It is a mistake to take scripture literally.
3. Siimilarly, those who, in the name of a religion, make divisive comments about and take actions against other religions and their adherents either do not understand the deep truths of their own religion or misrepresent those truths for their own purposes. They certainly don’t understand the religions they argue against. They are commonly referred to as fundamentalists because they insist on a literal interpretation of scripture due to their no having the capacity to do otherwise. Your comments about the actions and opinions of some supposed religionists refer to the fundamentalist variety only and not to the religion they mistakenly think they represent (Venn diagramming comes in handy here).
Sir, with due respect I disagree with your statements. The problem analysed here it is not with a few fundamentalists that have taken the words of their sacred books literally and too far. The problem is that in whatever way they take the words, the injunction for conversion is undoubtedly found in those books, as well as the explicit view of the followers of other religions as inferiors, mistaken and in need of redeem. Talking of the catholic church for instance, that It is what I know the most, missionaries are following the instructions that the Vatican itself gives, and the Vatican bases on the Bible for their self-appointed right to convert. Even those among the “moderates” support the missions abroad, with few exceptions. Same with other christian denominations.
And regarding the words of hatred in the Quran, if they were not the view of the “moderate” muslims, logic says: why there is NO authority that proposes to change it and adapt it to a society of brotherhood? They cannot…
So the problem is not in the interpretation of the books by a few extremists; the problem is with the books themselves and the hate they contain. They talk of a God/Allah full of hatred for those who do not worship Him and the injunction to convert the whole world in their flock.. But the believers in those religions cannot change the book because it “is the word of God/Allah”. Then, what solution is left? Only those who do not belong to either of the religions can challenge and defy these statements….I would say in the name of human rights!!
Except Hindus took great efforts to remove Buddhism from India, went to war with Jains in the past, and there’s a big rivalry between Vaishnavites and Shaivites about whether Vishnu or Shiva is the supreme deva. There’s a lot of great things about Hinduism, but religious competition exists within it just as it does with Abrahamic religions. Maybe not as a large as a scale but it’s there.
[…] https://mariawirthblog.wordpress.com/2015/12/22/of-course-hindus-wont-be-thrown-into-hell/ […]
Dear Ravi
That’s a far fetched attempt at Equivalence.
Hindus/Buddhists have killed each other in the last 2500 years, as much as Musims/Christians kill each other every year on average. NEVER EVER try to compare them.
“Maybe not as a large as a scale but it?s there.”
Yes that is the point, it is atleast 10 times less if not 100 times.
Please read the scriptures, Buddhism/Jainism do not necessarily believe in God, Hinduism/Sikhism believe in god despite that huge difference they have more or less lived in peace and respect for each other
Christian Bible, Quran are rip-offs of the same Torah, yet they have killed each other in Millions, really millions.
The difference is in scriptures, there is a huge difference between Dharmic fundamentalism and Abrahamic fundamentalism.
Agreed.
Please do not maliciously slander Hindus by false moral equivalence and innuendos.
1. There is NO Hindu/Buddhist/Jain text that asks for violence against non-believers, while Islam, Judaism and Christianity definitely do. Instead, India’s Dharmic tradition emphasises non-violence and care of others.
2. There is no credible evidence in history of India of any sectarian warfare between the Indian sects or “religions”, while there is ample and constant evidence of sectarian and religious wars throughout history of such wars and intolerance within Christianity and Islam.
3. Powerful Buddhist emperors and Jain kings ruled over most of India through more than a millennium, before the Muslim invasions.
4. There is enough recorded history of Muslims forcing Buddhists to convert, wantonly slaughtering Buddhist monks and destroying major Buddhist institutions like Nalanda.
Another gem. Maria.
Here in the US, some two years ago, one congregant had asked his pastor, ” do you think Gandhi (the real one !) is now getting fried in hell fire for not embracing christianity?”. The pastor was reluctant to weigh in, nodded and fell silent. This raised a minor storm in the papal world. Most affirmed he was ‘certainly in hell for not becoming a christian’. Those who opposed the above speculation were reprimanded by the church. According to muslims and christians even Dalai Lama has no option !!
This is the doctrinal flaw both Islam and christianity will have to live with. Their scriptures laid down the rules with no place for ambiguity. ‘Its our way or hellway. No two ways about it.’
Thank you, Maria-iji for your timely and enlightening article. You are a blessing (from Anandamayi Ma) conveyed through all your inspirational writings that many people hold dear. I have not only circulated this article to several people in my contact list but am exploring the idea of working on a draft resolution to the UN (from Canada, USA and UK.) Should anything concrete come out of it., the credit will be yours.. .

The article is Written in a very nice way Maria. Kept me engaged till the end. Have a look at Tarek Fatah’ and his take on Islam.
Thanks Basu ji. i guess the first comment by someone has to be approved and i opened the laptop only now… so i deleted your reminder.
it would be great if something came out of the suggestion. it may be the right time, because on one hand, more and more people start doubting that “terrorism has nothing to do with Islam” and it would give Muslims a chance to disown unacceptable verses. on the other hand, the attempts to ban criticism of Islam are still on and it seems with the blessings of the present US government. those attempts must never meet with success.
Maria, Please stop spreading your deliberate hate mongering. How is your article is different than one that takes some contentious topic from Vedas and paint a bad hateful picture on the entire peaceful community/religion as if those topics are the very breath of their normal life?. Remember that just because you are from a Western county and holds a christian name, you get undue weight in your totally wrong and hateful observations. The totality of any religion, whether its Christianity, Islam or Hinduism is bigger than the negatives in their various scriptures evolved over thousands of years and modified by various Geo-political-economics forces for their interests. Spread the good in all religions, please not the bad. Please don’t use your color, name and background for spreading sanathan dharma – not the hate towards other beliefs. By spreading hate, you are doing a great disservice to this nation and tarnishing a vast majority of peaceful minorities living in this great nation. By your hateful and totally misinterpreted quotes, remember that you are playing into the same forces who are no different than the same old Crusaders and current ISIS.
Dear Thon, where is hate mongering? Please give a quote. I point out facts and wished the dogmatic religions would take out this unacceptable claim that heathen/ infidels burn eternally in hell only because they do not follow ?the only true religion.? (btw, Christianity and Islam still didn?t sort out which one is right, if any)
This has nothing to do with the followers of these religions. In fact I know many Christians who wished the Church would correct this. There are others, who refuse to believe even that the Church still converts people from other faiths to ?save? them. In the west, where people now are free to leave the Church, this condemnation of other people doesn?t go down well, and the Church would gain if it were more reasonable and not so discriminating towards others (what can be a worse final destination than hell?).
Should ?Only the Church can save. If you don?t get baptized, you burn in hell? (similar for Islam) not be scrapped and should we not work towards it? Even the Pope obviously does not believe that non-Christians go to hell, but he has to stick to the dogma for reasons which are not related to the spiritual well-being of his flock, but to retaining power. You may have heard that the Pope gave an interview to a German paper some years ago where he said that atheists (there are 30% of them in Germany ? mainly because the Church spoiled their belief in ?God? by limiting God to a kind of superman who wants to be worshipped in a certain way and dispatches all others who don?t do so to hell) can also reach the same place as Christians if they follow their conscience and live a moral life. It made big news. However the Vatican ?clarified? soon after that according to the Christian doctrine, atheists cannot be saved.
Yes, by all means spread the good things about religions, but don?t shy away to point out the poison that has done so much damage over the centuries.
Read the article again slowly. I am sure you will agree. If there is any sentence that is unacceptable, please tell me.
Maria is stating the fact that violence and attrocities throughout history are undeniably associated to two major religions: Christianity and Islam, and tracing the origin of the hate that those religions offer to the rest of the world in the statements of their own scriptures. You are “calling criminal” to the one who denounces the crime! So is it better to keeo silent and let them do because sanathan dharmi are peaceful and they should remain silent while they are eaten up by the real haters till they are no more on the face of the earth?
Something else: please do not use racist/xenofobhic classifications of the human being to tell who has more/less right to access a wisdom that it is universal, as Sanathan Dharma is. Precisely because of her background, she knows much better what she is talking about. And able to appreciate more what is worthy and what not. And hindus are capable enough to think by themselves because they have a training that the followers of the other religions do not have, so don´t fear so much for them. Whoever thinks all religions are the same, s/he has no idea of the religions s/he is comparing.
Hi Thon: I don?t know where you live or in which country you have made home for economic or any other reasons.
(And I also don?t know if you are a Hindu, Jew, catholic or Protestant, Christian, (Sunni / Shia/ Ahmadya) Muslim, Buddhist, Jain, Parsee, Agnostic, Atheist, Communist or an opportunistic pseudo- secularist of the Congress/Trinamool /CPM/ Naxalites or any other political vote bank/ preferential treatment seeking kind .)
But those factors are somewhat irrelevant and doesn?t permit you to be a blatant racist or a freewheeling hate monger by the very tone of your post.
It?s not just in India where a foreign born Indian politician was until mid- 2014 a de facto prime minister, countries like Canada has seen a non-white Indo-Canadian as a provincial premier and several Indo- Canadians or other non-white immigrants/ refugees hold federal cabinet posts during this century. Guyana and Trinidad have also seen PMs of Indian origin and to a lesser extent some other countries they have headed local government system.
[Although on the other hand, I have read (and/or heard) of racially discriminatory instances in the treatment of African origin foreign students, bank professionals and visiting players. I won?t even go into our infatuation with the fair complexioned Bombay movie stars sometimes of questionable acting ability during the post 1950 era. }
No one can deny historical facts especially when it pertains to the pre- 1758 Indian subcontinent going back several hundred years when Muslim invaders have massacred and raped/enslaved millions of indigenous Hindu Indians, savagely destroyed and/or pillaged temples and where possible, generally laid down the Koran or the Head law until the brave Sikh warriors were born and died in their thousands. In that context, the post 1757 British Colonial occupation (until their viscous Partition kick lesson to us ) was far less barbaric and left some good legacies amongst many bad ones.
The fact of the matter is that Hindu Kings who existed long before Christianity and Islam were born or before the Islamic invasions, have not only accommodated (not just tolerated) persecuted Christians, Jews, Parsees, even Muslims on their own terms but also didn?t have the mindset to invade foreign lands and/ or convert people of other faith.
And the horrendous genocides and mass conversions that the Muslim Jihadists/ Muslim invaders, Christian Crusaders/ Christian colonialists did in Africa, Asia, or the Americas with their ?civilizational? missions (or for ?saving? the locals) can?t be washed away however much one wishes to do that.
Ever since the1947 partition to this day, one has to see at the totally unacceptable history of the volume of ethno-religious cleansing, gang rape of Hindu and aboriginal girls & women , destruction/desecration of temples, land grabs, and millions of internal & external displacement of Hindus in East Pakistan (1947- Dec 1971) & Bangladesh (since Dec 1971) most of whom still live in West Bengal in slums and squalors in an already over populated West Bengal ? thanks to CPM and Trinamool. That is not to say, that Hindu & Christian minorities (very few Sikhs as most were killed or fled to India) are not persecuted in Pakistan but their numbers are significantly small in order of magnitude in comparison with the hapless Bangladeshi minorities, now only about 10% of the population- thanks to those Muslims who still believe in the violent extremism taught in Koran and yet haven?t abandoned the Bengali language/ national anthem/literature or the Hindu culture in general.
Of course, there are many progressive Roman Catholic or Protestant Christians who don?t subscribe to the extremes of Christian ideology and/or have abandoned them without the fear of being hounded for blasphemy unlike the generally, closeted progressive Muslim men (and women) who fear of being labelled as blasphemous and punished accordingly in one way or the other even if they live in a western democratic country. The point is that both the main stream followers (3.5 million people before any deduction of the official renouncers if the same) of these two Abrahamic religions need to expunge on record, the most objectionable (& defying all anti human rights conventions of UN) parts of the Bible and the Koran (it?s no good hiding behind the bogus statements like Islam is religion pf peace or that?s not my Islam or the terrorists have no religion etc.)
India is a little lucky in that no significant (Islamist) terrorist attacks occurred of late following the horrifying decade since October 2001, that?s hardly the case in Western or Eastern Europe (including ex-USSR.) In the UK or Canada as no doubt in the U.S. numerous unimaginable terror attacks have been prevented due to wide spread intelligence through many communities, regrettably, at the expense of sacrificing much of the cherished rights to individual privacy and freedom.
That said, it?s a mirage if we think that all terrorist threats and/ or existential risks to our wellbeing will go away if we just leave them alone and keep quiet about the atrocities committed in the name of Islam. One has just look at what ISIS has done to the innocent, non- violent, peaceful, non-Abrahamic 6000 year old Yazidi people in North Iraq. The Yazidis have not only gone through many genocides in Iraq in the past but now since August 2014 are being decimated in and around Sinjar, Kurdistan after the Kurdish fighters fled under ISIS invasion. Since then as per the Kefir dictat under Islam, the Yazidi villages were destroyed, thousands of Yazidi men were beheaded and 7000 infidel Yazidi girls and women were captured, raped and used as sex slaves by ISIS fighters including gang raping of a 9 year old girl who was made pregnant and abandoned. Many of those girls who were rescued or managed to escape are now facing a nightmare in their erstwhile homeland especially many carrying a child of Jihadi fighters. And there are many orphans and widows of the infidel Yazidi men killed by ISIS. These news, by design, never get any play in the ?ever so secular? Indian English media and yet such news are widely reported by the western media. When will those infidels get and the orphans get the justice they deserve?
So, please, please, THON, don?t preach about the good or the peace loving currency of the Abrahamic religion particularly when it comes to Koran.
In this day and age, one shouldn?t still be afraid and be unable to openly say what?s wrong is wrong and what?s unacceptable in any religion without fear or favour (there?s no trade-offs between two wrongs both should be culpable if that happens.) By so doing, we are also helping those who still think everything stated in Koran is Allah?s words or the same in the Bible is gospel.
Last but not least, I am particularly grateful to Maria-ji for her writings and wish there were more who could follow in her footsteps.
REVISED POST RESENT
Hi Thon: I don?t know where you live or in which country you have made home for economic, spiritual or any other reason.
But you are coming across as a racist or a conceited hate monger from the tone of your post.
It?s not just in India where a foreign born Indian politician was until mid- 2014 de facto prime minister, countries like Canada has seen a non-white Indo-Canadian as a provincial premier and several Indo- Canadians or other non-white immigrants/ refugees holding federal cabinet posts. Its only possible in a Hindu majority country like India, to control Hindu temples whilst giving lands to churches or providing subsidy to Muslims to go to Mecca.
The horrendous genocides and mass conversions that the Muslim Jihadists/ Muslim invaders, Christian Crusaders/ Christian colonialists did in Africa, Asia, or the Americas with their ?civilizational? missions (or for ?saving? the locals) can?t be washed away however much one wishes to do that.

Hi Thon,
it is the doctrines that are being discussed here not spreading any kind of hatred you are mistakenly complaining. Both christians and muslims assert their doctrines would compel an individual to officially convert and accept their faiths in order to avoid the eternal hellfire. Are you familiar with these facts or not. If not please talk to knowledgeable individuals from those faiths. The madarassas of India will not fly indian flag on republic day. How is it against their faith to fly the flag of the country? Just asking. Anyways talk to muslims and christians as to the requirements to gain entry to heaven.
On the other hand according to sanatana dharma all sentient beings will have to go through the karma siddhanta doctrine. All people will attain moksha or muskti once they resolve all their accrued karma regardless of their faith. Of course they have to follow a dharmic way of life like patanjali’s eight step path to get there or some such pious living with mediation among other things. Besides there is no permanent hell for anyone, hindu or non hindu in hinduism.
As long as hindus are in vast majority be assured there will not be any radical developments, once the muslim population goes acutely up and reaches critical mass, nothing is guaranteed.Cheers.
If you want to spread awareness of the peace that Hinduism propounds, the respect it shows to other religions, without getting back any, you need to translate these blogs into European languages. Secondly, Buddhism holds this place in the minds of Europeans. Most haven’t heard of Hinduism.
An indoctrinated young European Catholic 15 yr old was very curious about India and she asked me many questions about “India” for her school report. Most questions centered around Hinduism and the caste system and whether Hindus can be converted to Christianity. I replied that Christians can’t be converted to Hinduism. A knowledge system , as you called it Maria, older than most, has yoga and Buddhism spreading its message. There is no need for fear that other religions which are dogmatic and believe in indoctrination , will /are disrespect(ing) it. Whoever does these actions for the power will suffer their own karma. We are but a pawn in this illusion called Maya. Your writing is wonderful but I sense a certain fear that you feel Hinduism isn’t getting the respect it deserves . A truly spiritual Person believes in how one behaves in every day life and doesn’t care too much for the fruit of one’s actions. Karmanyevadhikaraste maaphalechukadachana. Now Beyoncé and Coldplay, with their popularity and audience reach, are glamorizing Hinduism in their latest videos. Centuries old
Ways of thinking will remain. Love will conquer fear and hate. Stay confident and enjoy the oneness with the supreme truth whenever you meditate! Om!
Very idealistic last sentence with which I would love to agree, but facts are different: the number of Hindus along history has depleted at the same pace that the invasive aggressive religions and ideologies have spread and continue to spread. And this trend will continue. No matter how spiritual we are and how truth may prevail, that it may happen that there will not be people to live up to these truths in their daily lives, because the aggressive religions and ideologies will eat us up.
Of course Hinduism is not getting the respect it deserves. In India and all over the world. If Beyonce and the likes are the new faces for making Hinduism popular through a distorted superficial iand trivilialised image, I would rather prefer it to continue more unknown and reachable only those who have a genuine interest.
In my opinion, in pur Sadhana is very fine to search that Unity, but we have a role to play in life: as fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, workers, neighbours, and Sanatan Dharmis. And It is our duty as Sanatan Dharmis to do our best to defend Dharma, of course leaving the fruits to Bhagavan. But as far as I could understand, Sri Krishna never told Arjuna to keep with his arms folded waiting for the spread of Adharma.
‘@ Durgasiva and My name means Divine:
I appreciate views of both of you. Of course Krishna did not say Arjuna to wait for spreading Adharma. Does is mean to go against Adharma people straightaway? NO! Adharma only spreads when Dharma is not practiced. Tell me how many of us practicing Dharma as prescribed by Hindus Vedas and Shastras? At least Trikala Sandhyavandanam by Brahmins is being practiced? Forget about 3 times, at least one time in a day? Daily Suryanamaskar by other Hindus? No…. Never. Is Gorakshna takes place? We know so many cow slaughter houses in India. Are the parents and elders treated in correct way by their children? Are poor people given food and shelter by government and political people? These are not Adharma, you see?
Where are ethics and morals of those time? Why we are not teaching these to present generations in the schools? Why we need to study of Akbar, Babar, Carson, Mountbatten, etc. Who are they? Where are the histories of the sons of the soil? Where is an exclusive lesson on Adi Sankara, Chankya, Aryabhatta, Vevekananda, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Ramana Maharishi and so on……. so on? Where are the lessons on Ramayana and Mahabharata, two great epics of this country?
If we do not teach our children about our ancestors who ruled this country and who spread our Sanatana Dharma and who stood as model to others, how do you expect your children to be Dharmic followers? What moral right we have to ask them to follow?
All Sanatana Dharma followers once started following their Dharmic duties correctly, no doubt Adharma cannot come near us, forget about destroying!
Yes, of course, Sir. But in the meantime those really faboulous implementations are done (if ever) I find that what Maria is doing through her articles is contibuting to awareness among Hindus…somehow educating us. We should be aware what is going on, and I don´t think only “perfect” christians, muslims, marxists, etc defend their ideas. Then why not us, Moreover when there are attacks on what for us is sacred. I do not find incompatible to try to improve daily as a Dharmic and the many things we would correct from society, with fighting adharma. Because meanwhile those ideal conditions of every hindu being a perfect hindu, and society perfectly moral, attacks are going on, and the more aware Hindus are, the more they will appreciate their heritage and richness. They should know that while for Hindus all have a right to follow their beliefs, in those beliefs there is an injunction to finish off whoever doesn´t believe in either Bible, Quran or secular society.
I would agree with most of the original article. Just one warning.
Saying people of other faiths (any one) should be told by a government (any one) to “disown” unpopular verses in their holy books is VERY dangerous territory! Can you imagine all the honest, well-meaning people who would oppose government editing of their religion and pick jail or other punishment over betraying elements of their religion?
Disagreeing is one thing. But opening the door for government/law enforcement to start flipping through the pages of anyone’s scriptures with a pen in one hand and handcuffs in the other is something else entirely!
Be well.
is it not far more dangerous if a harmful, divisive, nonsensical statement like “all those who don’t believe what this book says, are damned to hell for ever and ever” is considered as holy and sacred???
Again, NOT excusing or applauding whatever a holy book says here, just pointing out that if a government starts telling us what we may or may not believe there will be no end to it. Look at how China operates inTibet and within their own country, appointing religious leaders who do what they say, banning scripture, etc.
Do you see the difference? I’m saying criticize, argue, discuss….yes! Let’s just tread very lightly when it comes to thinking the government is authorized to “fix” a religion. Their track record is not very good (middle ages right on through 2016).
Peace.
Another very important distinction comes to mind…
People, churches, holy books, all teaching something nasty about those who disagree, does not have an actual, physical effect on others. Beliefs, thoughts, feelings, etc. are in this category.
However, if/when someone (religious or not) begins to teach and proclaim violence against those who disagree, it crosses the line from belief and disagreement into the zone of violence, harassment and worse. In that case, most governments would be within their rights to protect the innocent and restore peace by stopping those who promote and carry out the violent acts, yes?
As far as I know, there is only one major religion that teaches, in its books and from its pulpits, that its followers have a duty to threaten and kill those who disagree. In my country, despite numerous killings of innocent civilians at the hands of this “religion,” the government so far has refused to restrict or ban its practice.
So what does one do?
Thanks for this opportunity to share ideas. Be blessed.
Of course, Hindus wouldn’t be thrown into “hell”! 😀 I think that Islam must not have been a God-centric “religion” in the first place, just like Hinduism. I think it might have been an ideology or “Ism”. There are so many isms in the world from Capitalism, Socialism, Marxism, Leninism, Communism and there are infinite shades of each one of these overlapping with one another. And then there are religions in the world like Christianity, Islam, Hinduism etc. Isms generally define a method to get an objective. They stress on the method and claim that is the sole and right way to go.. These are social, political and economic in nature. Isms propagate dogma on the right, left, centre, right of centre or left of centre. Religions are also like Isms. But there is a difference. Religions except Islam, do not define any specific methodology of living as defined by their originator. Religions except Islam do not promote any specific value systems. The value systems followed in Hinduism and Christianity are customary in nature that has been followed by people in that society for long and nothing sacred or specific or defined by anybody. In this way the Isms and Islam are of one nature. They define a particular methodology of living. People studying Islam will understand how well Prophet Mohammad has defined and codified ways to live. In those days of brutality and power mongering, Islam must have been a balm and succour to the people in that region. As we go deeper and deeper we can only marvel at the work that Prophet has done. Islam as a religion was far ahead in terms of defining a society. But in my view it was a reaction to the society that existed at that time and defined every possible way to ensure that people live happily, considering the environment at that time. The Objectives of Islam are clear and no right thinking individual who understands it will oppose it. The problem is times have changed. Hence methodologies need to be changed to achieve the same objectives. This is the same problem with Isms. They appear as a reaction to the society that existed at a particular time and define a methodology to reach an objective. When times change the methodologies need to be changed to achieve the same objectives. Hence “Ism’s and Islam find it difficult to change as what has been well codified is the methodology. And that methodologies may not lead to the same objectives today. In other religions nobody defined anything. Religion was simply a state tool to oppress people and people in power defined what is right and what is wrong. Hence many religions suffered erosion in their following but today come out as religions, where adoption to new methods are not being questioned that vehemently or people who oppose changes are marginalised. While Ism’s and Islam steadily increased their following because of the well codified methods, but today make too little progress in adapting to the changed times. This is a problem of being too good at a time, but not able to be flexible over a period because of the well meaning and clear definitions that were done considering a particular environment. Change is a difficult thing to do. Hence the way isms and Islam work is to ensure that a continuity is kept while making incremental changes in their methodologies. Even hardcore fundamentalist dogmatic people will wear spectacles, ride in cars, take modern medicine and hence change is acceptable to them. They will be wary of such changes that will be fundamentally changing the whole value systems of the society and creep up a new culture, which they would not be accepting. But the media in general paints people of ism and Islam in a particular color for simplicity sake and sometimes for propaganda sake. Hence Muslims are painted as dogmatic people, hardcore fundamentalists, terrorists etc. Isms will morph or die out over a period. Islam also is changing continuously but cannot match the speed of other religions where there is nothing much defined in the first place anyway. What we need is understanding of people following these isms and Islam and helping them to change over a period. They will be tools that help us improve our political, social, economic and religious life.
Coming to Christianity, ”Devotion’, ‘Bhakti’ are the ways to cultivate our mind with humility and reception, so that it continuously receives ‘Gnyana’, ‘Wisdom’ and improves itself. In the western civilizations, God is the King and we are all his subjects. God rules over his subjects like a shepherd who rules over his sheep. So the minds steeped in western thoughts look for a shepherd or king to whom we can beholden ourselves. The way of life of Jesus is exemplary, his teachings revolutionary for his time. Jesus like Ram could have been a good king of his subjects (though he was not in a direct way a king, but he was the king of those who subjected themselves to him). As Ram is treated as an incarnation of a cosmic force, Jesus is treated as an incarnation of GOD (god in flesh). Jesus was unique for his time. Mohammad was Unique for his time. Ram was Unique for his time. Krishna was Unique for his time. Gandhiji was Unique for his time. Since they were Unique, we talk about them today as Unique. A white light appears to be of a single color. But in fact it is the convergence of multiple colors. Pure Light is white. If one wants to be part of white light, one has to accept all. Otherwise he/she will be holding on to a single wavelength or idea. The values that Jesus taught are important for the human society forever. We need to understand what he talked with respect to his environment and people whom he talked to. Jesus declared to his subjects that he is their savior. What Christ says here is exactly same as Krishna said to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita. No difference. What Mohammad says and what Krishna says are strikingly similar. One of the central tenets of Islam (Koran) is God is unborn, eternal, permanent, never has come into being, never will come into being. And this is what Krishna says exactly, word-by-word to Arjuna. Krishna also emphasizes the temporary nature of human bodies and the relationships and says nobody is killer or killed. Almost same as in Koran, victory to God. Jesus and Mohammed lived a perfect life for their respective times. Even their enemies could not find fault with him. If these people had not lived such a life, they would not have been talked about at all. This is what sets great people apart from people like you and me. Sacrifice is a common element that is present from the Big-Bang to Stellar evolution to Biological life evolution. The entire eco-system of predators and preys is a system of sacrifice that facilitates evolution of higher intelligence. It is Jesus? and Paul’s sacrifice that created a great way of life called Christianity that has brought in new thoughts into human civilization. Now, this is where the Church, not Christianity, fails: Jesus? sacrifice is not to proclaim that he is the SON of GOD, but to demonstrate the power of love, compassion, pardon and affection to his subjects. This is what we need to understand from Jesus? life and follow. The message of SON of GOD is for those people who politick his thoughts for their own selfish needs. Assuming Jesus claimed “he is the only way to God”, it is true, because he thought that is the only way his subjects could see love, compassion, pardon and a beautiful life. At his point of time, there was nothing else that his subjects could have, that would teach the power of love, compassion and sacrifice. Jesus popularized the concept of pardon/forgiveness in the societies of those days. In a society where animosities are deep-rooted and historical, forgiveness is the only way people can live together and flourish. Hence it is a very important tool for society’s sustenance. Now also, we need to go back to Jesus to learn from him, how to forgive our enemies. It is very much the need of the hour for the humans. But to extrapolate it and say that god will forgive every sin of ours and we can keep committing sins, is a foolish joke that churches often perpetuate. The reality is that by laws of this world, for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. We have to undergo the punishments for our sins. In my view, mad man, devil of Hell or lord and god are all same. It depends on how one views it. The society in which Jesus lived, thought that he was either mad or devil of Hell. Hence they made sure that the worst criminal Burnables, is freed, but Jesus is killed. People of that region wanted to kill Jesus, even at the dangers of the criminal whom they afforded to release. When the same society realized the power of Jesus? teachings in terms of love, compassion and forgiveness, it treated Jesus as the SON of God. In every continent, there are abundant Jesus Christs. They are not understood in their period of time. Later on they are eulogized and immortalized. In Hinduism, there are various schools of thought. There is a Bhakti way or devotion path that claims that the path of Shiva or Vishnu or Shakti or Skanda or some other god/son-of-god is open to all, as claimed by Bible. It depends on individuals to choose their path. None of our thoughts are sinful in nature. To co-exist we need to have some rules, so that we do not abuse the power we have. These rules are either legal laws or set of morals we define for ourselves. ‘Sin’ appears so, when it is rubbed against a set of laws or morals. Not only humans, life of all kinds, have their own rules, so that they co-exist and survive. To take these sins to an extreme end and talk about sinning is frivolous. Humans can stop sinning in the way you see it only when stop living and die, which is what so many ‘nirvana’ religions preached. To say that human nature is evil and one can continue to sin, but come to the Lord and get forgiven, can enhance Church, but not Christ, who totally gave up his life as an example of love, compassion and forgiveness. Even when Jesus gave up his life, he prayed for the forgiveness of the people around him. It shows his greatness. In a way he paid for the sins of the people around him. But not truly. The deeds of the people who put Jesus on cross and freed up Barnabas followed them. It did not leave them. Jesus came back victorious in a way after several hundred years to them. The Institutionalizing of ‘Lord paying for the sins of his subjects’, in my view, is the only way Church found to establish itself. While the truth is Jesus stood as a human example for others. He stood as the ultimate testimony of a good human being, for people to emulate and follow. There are several people who have stood as examples themselves in their lives. It is easy to spin a religion for each of them and make money out of it. Instead, if one really feels that Jesus is great, they should be acting instead of preaching. One must act according to his wishes. One must act according to what one considers as his teachings.
Bahan Ji; Namaste!
Love to read your views about Sanatan Dharma the Eternal truth, directly originated from the cosmos. You are very clear in your thought and processes and very clearly you have put up comparisons including ups & downs of so many faiths being followed in this world.
Happy to note your reach to Hindu Religion. Not this life but I am sure You will make it to Maa Bharati at next best opportunity.
Love to read your ideas and deliberations about Hindu Dharma.
Dear Maria,
You have mistaken quoting the Bible. There it’s said about the righteous and the wicked, not Christians or Hindus. More over every religion teachers about the punishment of the wicked. In Hinduism it is the rebirth as lower creatures and even there is no moksha for the marginalized.
The Church claims that it alone has the full truth and it alone can save, maybe interpreting “I am the way..” or the exhortation to go out into the world and baptise, and other quotes in this way which suits its quest for dominion.
of course it is not true that Hindus go to hell, but because of this baseless claim the Church insists it must have the right to convert and how much harm it does!
Hindus believe in rebirth (which makes sense and has also scientific backing) and moksha will be there ultimately for everyone. in fact, we all ARE already one with the great Brahman. it’s ignorance which prevents us from seeing it.
It is different set of beliefs in different religions. As Hindus believe in rebirth (make no sense and no scientific background) others may have different faith. But these difference need not commit hate between communities or individuals. Example, the core social action in the teaching of Jesus Christ is love your enemies not kill them. You are comparing the merit of one religion with the demerit of others. Compare merits together and demerits together and it will be logical and justice.
there is one “demerit” in Christianity (and Islam) which is unacceptable, divisive and against any common sense: the claim that all must follow this religion if they want to be saved, otherwise they will suffer for all eternity terribly in hell.
When this nonsensical claim is not scrapped, there is no point in comparing the merits. it is like entering a house that has a collapsing foundation, but ignoring this dangerous fault and discussing about the furniture.
isn’t it amazing that in spite of all those ‘intelligent’ people in the famous universities in the west, nobody calls out the weak basis on which the “Christian values” of their societies are built?
‘@Maria Wirth. It is true that churches politicise the message of Jesus Christ and mosques politicise the message of Prophet Mohammed to spread their religion. But I don’t think it is right to blame their religion. Christianity as a religion (independent of the Chruch) preaches forgiveness and the fact that we are all co-existing as human beings means that we must not get into stupid fights, not seek vengeance for what one does, and forgive each other if they feel really sorry for their deeds. Islam as a religion (independent of the mosques) in my view is an ism, an ideology, like communism, capitalism, socialism, etc. It was true for its time. When a person understands the set-up or “the battlefield” where Mohammed wrote the Quran, no right-thinking individual would oppose it. Christianity, Islam, Smritis of Hinduism (Manusmriti, Puranas, Vaishnava/Saiva Upanishads, all need reform to suit the modern society.
One more thing. This is just my view on different things as I have analysed. Rebirth is a scientific statement but not the rebirth of “souls” which most Hindus believe. Sankara says that the Paramatma (Supreme Consciousness) and the Jeevatma (Reflection of the Will of the Supreme Consciousness, the conscience) are same. Vedas also talk about a primal Atman, which was the primal seed of manifestation and when it decided to evolve, became Brahman, the ever-evolving universe that we live in today. So all of us have the same “soul” or conscience. So does the question of rebirth of “different souls” arise? One more thing, the ‘I’ is a perception, created by a colony of neuron cells in our brain. Once we die, the neuron cells are also going to die and the ‘I’ is going to go off. This further validates that there is no “Rebirth of Souls” as such that most Hindus today believe.
The Vedic Atman is same as the Vedantic Nirguna Brahman and the Vedic Brahman is same as the Vedantic Saguna Brahman. My readings of the Vedas and Vedanta suggest that Vedas are science, Vedanta is philosophy. For eg: Vishnu, in my opinion, is translated as Inertia. This can be concluded from Vishnu Sahasranamam slokas 17 and 18 which say that Vishnu is the “mass-provider”. From this, I have translated Maya as rest-mass. Rest Mass is a perception, which is like an illusion, not exactly illusion. But Vedanta interprets Maya as illusion in a philosophical manner and has built huge theoretical empires on illusion and Maya. While Nasadiya Suktam in the Vedas say that the Atman wanted to “realise itself” and the universe is a yajna, a sacrifice, an evolutionary sacrifice where beings improve their intelligence and correspondingly build materials out of their intelligence, Vedanta says that the Nirguna Brahman is trapped by Maya and ignorance, so it becomes Saguna Brahman and one has to conquer the Maya. But we cannot conquer this Maya using our brain which is made of a few pounds of fat and protein, right? ? So we are living in the world of rest-mass, where we have to evolve into more intelligent beings, which is the desire or the will of the Atman which is reflected in our conscience, and must also reflect in our actions.
Here is one of the sites of my friends, from whom I have gained and am at the quest of gaining more knowledge of the Vedas. You can realise that Vedas are very different from what Vedanta says. vedabhasya.blogspot.in
vasudhaivakutumbakam: the premise of existence of “soul” in Sanathan Dharma is wrong because it “imports” a christian concept that doesn´t fit properly: “souls” are individualised in Christianity, do not reincarnate, and plants do not have “souls” in them, among many other differences. So comparing “souls” to “Atman” it is a wrong starting which cannot bring a right ending.
Regarding reincarnation, still many hindu authors with much knowledge use the word “soul” for general understanding, I guess, when they mean simply “individual”, and no, it is not the Atman in the individual or Jivatman who reincarnates, , but the Sukshma Sarira or Astral Body:
“The soul migrates with the astral body, or Sukshma-Sarira or Linga-Deha. This astral body
is made up of nineteen Tattvas or principles, viz., five organs of action, five organs of knowledge,
five Pranas, mind, intellect, Chitta (the subconscious), and Ahankara or egoism. This subtle body
carries with it all sorts of Samskaras or impressions, and Vasanas or tendencies, of the individual
soul. The subtle body moves towards heaven. When the fruits of good Karmas have been
exhausted, it gathers for itself a new physical body and reincarnates on this earth plane.
Those whose conduct has been good attain good births and those whose conduct has been
evil are thrown into sinful wombs or lower births.” Sw. Sivananda in his higly recommended book “All About Hinduism”.
durgasiva: 1) Different souls in different bodies is a Puranic concept, from which Buddhism and Jainism further propounded. Vedas recognise only one soul across the universe, which it calls the Atman.
2) In my opinion Astral body, dimensions, etc. are Vedantic and Puranic concepts. The Vedas never talk about dimensions of reality, nor do the Upanishads. The only dimensions, or a “multiverse” of existence that they talk about is first of the Supreme Consciousness (Atman), then of Purusha (Dark Matter) and Amba (Matter). Then came the inert uterus (Hiranyagarbha) of spacetime made of four dimensions or faces: Length, Breadth, Height and time. Then came Brahma (Gravity), Vishnu (Inertia), Siva (Dark Energy) and Sakthi (Momentum). Then came Apa (photons), Aghora (Bosons) and Aghnya (fermions), from them evolved Suras (Quarks) and Asuras (Anti-Quarks) the leader of whom was Indra (Baryonic nucleus) which evolved into the Vasu (atom) and later formed mortal biological compounds (Nara). The translations I have provided are from the research work of one of my friends, whose footsteps I follow. Many people today interpret this various sequences of evolution as “dimensions of reality” in the Vedantic realm and have woven stories out of them, which are called Puranas.
3) I don’t think SS has summarised them properly. Let me give an alternate explanation to this. This is what the Vedas and Upanishads have actually proclaimed, which I understand. If you have read Mandukya Upanishad, it says AUM in Vaisvanara (and Taijasa) state is ekonavimsati mukha or nineteen faced. Modern scientists define nineteen states of matter, which they have been able to observe in labs or hypothesize for the sake of completeness. The states of matter are Amorphous solids, Crystalline Solids, Liquids, Liquid Crystals, Gas, Supercritical Liquid, Colloid, Plasma, Electron-Degenerate Matter, Neutronium, Quantum Hall of 2 dimensional electron systems, Quantum Spin Hall state, Bose Einstein condensate, Fermionic condensate, Supersolids, Superfluids, Quark-gluon plasma, Weakly Symmetric matter and strongly Symmetric matter. These are the various forms that our astral/biological body can be present in. Garuda Purana says that after death, the ‘I’, a perception created by a colony of neurons, goes off. Our body then starts to stop working (pretha), fully stops working (bhoota), disintegrates (paisasa), becomes atoms and molecules (Vasu), matter introduced by force fields (Rudra) and then in the form of quarks and anti-quarks (Aditya). When our body is in the form of Aditya, it lies in the region of Dyauh, the region of the Amba, which the Puranas interpret as heaven. When the rest mass effect (Maya) conquered by our body is less, the body parts travel back again and form newer organisms indirectly. Otherwise, it crosses the Vaitarini river (the sea of rest mass providers) and becomes one with the Atman. I can see that SS has confused to different concepts: realisation of the self and the disintegration of the human body.
4) It is also evident that SS has also confused up the karma concept. Deeds of the past birth affect the future births is indeed a scientific statement. It is evolution. It is genetics. What we do with our body, our genes learn them, adapt them and modify themselves. These modifications are passed on to the next birth in terms of younger generations. That’s how monkeys that used the limbs to hang on trees with two limbs, developed a hand-like structure in subsequent generations. if they have not hung on trees, if they have not used their fore-limbs to pick fruits, insects and stones, hands would not have developed. Even now human beings who had lot of hair on the body lost them in subsequent generations as they started living in caves and huts the hair that covered them from temperature variation no longer was required as they started living in enclosures.. When man starts living in cold regions, melanin becomes less and subsequent generations change colour. When white-skinned people start living in hot conditions, they develop melanin over several generations and become brown. What we do and how we do influences the next births in this planet. This is a perfectly valid concept even according to modern science. Speaking in the modern language, suppose there is a man who has utterly wasted all his life in gambling and lost all his money, his whole family is going to be on the streets. His offspring will also be affected and will be born in a poor environment. Sounds logical, doesn’t it? ?
Let it be merit or demerit it’s their faith. But it is not preventing them to love others. How can one say that all men to believe what I believe? Even in Hindu religion there is no moksha for all. Only those do good deeds and become a Brahmin will get moksha. The people not listed in the four varnas never get moksha! Is it a merit or demerit?
Very well written NAMASKAR with folded hands
Great Article Maria! This is not just for reading. But really need to be followed. There is certainly need for such a Complaint in UN. China, India & Japan should join hands for the same, because they are powerful nations and they don’t have a majority of Islam or Christianity.
Thank you so much Maria Ji for highlighting the issues that Christians and Muslims have brought upon our country and religion. May God be with you and all the suffering Hindus who want to stand up to their enemies. But may the wish of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam spread to those who think that they are the most important people, and that everyone should follow them.
I think Hindus should file a complaint wth the UN against the Indian Government for massive discrimination and systemic destruction of Hindu institutions through Government control and takeover and for systematic promotion of Islam and Christianity. There is clear and unambiguous evidence of the discriminatory effect of Indian laws on Hindu institutions that i hope will warrant a good case.
It is high time when old and Tribal religion books are amended and edited with the consent of their religion leaders
But the tragedy is no religion has a head with the exception of Pope and Dalai Lama
A soul is neutral. It is bound with the flesh body with its vasana(desire) if it is sathvik or rajasik or thamasik. Sathvik desire is pure and that soul wish to realize god not interested in any type of karma. Rajasa wish to enjoy life and rule the world it lives. Thamasik life not at all interested in others welfare, like to hurt others for own selfish needs. Once the sathvik soul liberate its love to the body attains moksha. Simiarly all stages. very few directly go this stage from thamasik eg., is Valmiki rishi who wrote Ramayan. There it is clear “Karma” is driving you. In Hinduism you can see Gods or Avatars are bowing in front of so called Rishis due to this, as they are liberated from Karma and have no material desire. Other religions tie the people with sin concept. Hinduism shows the way of karma. Now most of the religions slowly started changing their view point from sin to Karma? even they are now telling that Hinduism is the oldest and pure, and is spoiled by the time, and these new Abrahamic religions are the new form of the old culture (Hinduism) and by converting people leading them to the truth. A simple question is if Hinduism is the mother of all religions you all will go back to it? or you want the mother to go the children and accept their hollowness? is a question.
Your article is very interesting and divine. Loka Samatha Sukhino |Bhavanthu!
Dear Mr. Bob, Moksha is for all who is liberated from their Karma. It has nothing to do with Varna(Brahmin). Brahmin is really who understands Brahma. You can see many places people change their varna. Shri Krishna born as a Gopala was fighting in the war as Kshatriya. Dronar as a Brahmin fight in the war as a Kshtriya. Don’t mix things. Ultimate aim of a person as per Hinduism is to attain mosha by liberating from Karma. This is done by Meditating not by doing karma. This can be achieve by all, once you are liberated from karma, even when you do karma you are not attaining the fruits of the karma what you are doing. This is a very deep knowledge. To understand it you need to mediate. Which other religions are not promoting or supporting. They want followers not thinkers! Loka Samastha sukhino bhavanthu.

Madam, Can you marry off anyone of your relatives into a Brahmin caste Hindu family with their full consent? Obviously impossible, right? They consider even you an untouchable. When converting into Hinduism you must have thought of this. I see you believe in the hindu concept of rebirth. Consider this. If rebirth is true, it can happen anywhere in the universe because a soul has no need to be born again on like a tiny place like earth when there are zillions of habitable planets in the known universe and the unknown realms. You can also be born in the past and future also because a soul does not have to follow the terrestrial time which is just our perception and not absolute. We are too puny to understand what the Bible says. Show me one figure like Christ anywhere. I am ready to worship him. To me Christ is the ultimate philosophy – He is beyond all human wisdom.
i will never tell my mother (97) not to pray to Jesus, nor anyone who has genuine devotion. but you need to be aware that Jesus is a creation of the Chruch, as we know little about his life, not even whether he lived.
it is the devotion which is helpful to the devotee and the truth, the one God or one Consciousness will respond. Forms do not matter ultimately. they are helpful.
but as long as the Church claims that Hindus go to hell, it is unacceptable for me and for me it rubs off on Jesus…
Dear Maria,
Your passion for Hinduism is great and is praiseworthy. I read some of your articles and truly the language of your writing still communicates discontent, dissatisfaction and search for truth. Though your questions are one-sided but still I?m happy you?re searching for the truth. How would you negate the fact that the red Sea was split? Archaeologists have said it to be true.
Suppose if there was no God as mentioned in the Bible then how would you explain the artefacts found in on the floor of the red Sea. How would you explain the falling of the walls of Jericho? How do you explain creation? How do you negate the findings of historians mentioning Jesus and other facts mentioned in the Bible? How would you negate the fact that the arc of Noah is still in the plains of Ararat?
You are an intellectual person. I don?t mean to ridicule you nor do I want to convert you. Truth is not a philosophy but an evidence. May God open the eyes of the understanding so that you may see the truth, open your heart so that you may feel His love, heal your pain embedded deep within, joy of the living God be your portion.
Kind regards,
Rahul
U are talking about inter-cast inter-race marriage In ur x-anity will the cast x-ians marry a dalith? Why are u keeping separate Churches for converted daliths ?? Will a catholic marry a protestant ? Mr. when u are pointing an accusing one finger at somebody there are 3 fingers are pointing U.Understand ?Christ was teaching to love.He never asked anybody to condemn other religions and covert by hook or crook. He was a fine g’man , but his resurrection only a belief. His birth from a virgin cannot happen scientifically. But u believe it.It is ok for u.The greatest virtue of Hinduism is that it never point out an accusing finger at other religions. But when people like u come to attack they will give suitable reply Let ur belief save u always.!Wish u all the best !!
These two goody goody Christians (converted or have been one for centuries or not) simply have no sense of history (or deliberately trying to forget them) of the Crusades and the missionary zealots whether they were Spanish, Portugese or British as to what they did – in the name of Christ- and carried out most brutal and merciless genocide, massacre, rape and ethnic cleansing of millions and millions of native people In the Americas, Africa and Asia. These were only to be matched and often surpassed in the scale of inhumanity and in the aggregate numbers of non Muslims killed, raped, enslaved or converted in the name of Islamic Jihad and by the invaders and the Imams and their faithful followers. Ignore Armenian genocide, and there’s no need to get into the subsequently committed heinous crimes and terrorism to date by the likes of ISIS, Al Qaeda, Taliban, Boko-Haram, Al- Shabab, Jaish, Jamat and so on, but in terms of the scale of genocide and ethno-reilgious cleansing perpetrated by the Communists in the last century in USSR and China in the 20th century, they can match dollar for dollar with the crimes against humanity committed before them by the Christians and the Muslims. Just show me some similar scale of genocide, mass rape, demolition of places of worship and ethno-religious cleansing committed in the name of spreading Hinduism in the world.
Exactly: ?Truth is not a philosophy but an evidence.? you wrote.
But this evidence is in yourself. It does not depend what is found on the seafloor, when the seafloor itself is not really true. Discover what is really true about yourself. It needs mediation for that, not reading archaeological facts.
‘@laya: How ignorant you are! Your first question of marriage between a foreigner and Hindu (that too a Brahmin) is ruled-out. I have plenty example of this, even in our known family there is an example. I can vouch that they have happy married life.
Your second question is rebirth. Please tell me, in a hospital on any given day, so many children are born even in the same time. However, they are not equally grow or equally wealthy. Please tell me the scientific reason behind this? Your tiny brain will understand this? I doubt. Sanatana Dharma’s rebirth concepts only can explain this. Will tell you only on request or clarify with any Hindu spiritual guru in your near circle.
It seems you are a follower of Christianity. Well that’s fine. Just be there. To understand other religion, like Islam, Buddhism, please explore it and get the best out of it. Sanatana Dharma is not a religion like yours, it’s a way life. Have you got any idea of it? Learn it first before starting debate in this blog.
Oh my lord how misguided u r with the Abrahamic faiths and Islam just like the stupor author .hellfire is were u and rest of the inducunts belong.
I think you have Christianity wrong, but that’s just my opinion. Actually I believe most true believers would prefer to call themselves “followers of Jesus Christ.” I hope people are not deceived by your article. I believe that tolerance is the key. All Religion is man-made. Religion is simply an attempt for the creation (humankind) to re-create the Creator (God) in their own image (minds.) Since we were created to have dominion, and that truth has been distorted, we now believe that God created us and it’s up to us to return the favor… chuckle, chuckle… A relationship with God is a completely different matter and the reason WE WERE ALL created. Just something to think about.
Let us believe the truth .As regarding the creation of ,their religion, caste, creed etc are all man made. And I will say that man creates every thing except humans.Even the God is created by man.It is only a concept to differentiate man and animal.Gurus, prophets etc wanted man should not be animal. So they created God fearing in man’s mind. These gurus prophets etc created group of followers. These groups are religions. So the quality of each religion resembles its leader.Man always should strive for character, refinement and freedom. When considering these Miss.Maria found that Hindu religion is the top most. That is why she tells Hindus to be proud. There is no religion coming nearer to Hinduism in character, refinement and freedom.
Christianity is nothing like Islam or modern day Judaism. No where in the new testament does Jesus or his apostles say to kill anyone. The Talmud of the So called Jews identifies all non Jews as goy only here to serve the Jews. Zionism is the source of most of the trouble in the world today and Jewish bankers. The new testament says to love your brother, love your neighbor, and love your enemy. No other religion teaches this.
Yet the Church used such kind words to establish a ruthless tyranny in cohorts with the states, starting in Europe with death penalty imposed around 800 AD if one did not get baptised. In Germany there is a saying: ?the Church?s job is to keep the people stupid and the state?s job to keep them poor??
Why would there be the completely unnecessary dogma that all those who are not baptised go to hell ? based on Jesus saying ?I am the way..? and ?go out and baptize?? it is clearly for world domination. And they still keep this dogma. Once they give it up, I have no problem with the Church. Slowly people will realise that their view of God does not stand up to the Indian view and without pressure, people are free to choose their own way. No need for ?religion? ? means being bound (religare to bind) to a fixed doctrine.
Yes.I have been thinking about this for long. We should specify the verses in both these books which needs to be removed or de recognise both these religions, and they have no right to throw shit on other religions.
Most of the people do not know about Christianity. It’s a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, nothing with worldly. His teachings are not destructive but constructive. All humans can follow him irrespective of their religion, cast or creed. The church of Jesus Christ not any denominations you see in the world. It’s not a physical worldly organization or institution but spiritual. If anyone did any atrocity in the name of church, it is not Christianity but politics. The kingdom of Jesus is not an earthly kingdom and Christianity is a way of life not an ism. You can not be a christian without very close personal relationship with Jesus Christ which is not with other faith.
Could you please quote the teaching of Jesus saying that those who not baptized will be thrown to hell?
it is the doctrine of the Church. luckily it is not in the New Testament, but the Church interprets Jesus command to go out into the world and baptise and his “I am the way..”… that those who don’t get bapised go to hell and nobody comes to the father except through Jesus.
Ask yourself why is there this push for conversion?
You the author of this blog are a raging Anti Christ idiot and a fool. The Bible, God’s perfect word says Jesus is the Only Way and the only Saviour, He Himself said so: John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. The Bible warns us that the highway to Hell is paved with good intentions. Proverbs 14:12, ?There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.? The Bible repeats the same Scripture in Proverbs 16:25, word-for-word, and anytime God repeats something more than once, you had better take heed. The abyss of Hell is filled with people who were very sincere, and falsely thought they could merit Heaven by their own self-righteousness. Others were tricked by Satan, who gave them an attractive substitute for the new birth in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26, ?For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.? Galatians 3:26, ?For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.? If you don’t have faith alone in Christ Jesus, you are NOT God’s child. That means Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and followers of Judaism are all going to burn in Hell, because they all reject Jesus as the Messiah (1st John 2:22)!!! 1st John 2:22-23, ?Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: (but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also.? All Christ-rejecters will spend eternity burning in the lake of Fire. Revelation 20:15, ?And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.?
But what about those billions of religious people in the world today who DO believe in Jesus Christ? The apostle Paul warns us about ANOTHER JESUS, ANOTHER GOSPEL and ANOTHER SPIRIT. 2nd Corinthians 11:3, ?But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.? Lordship Salvation is ANOTHER GOSPEL, not the plan of salvation taught in the Scripture. Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons have ANOTHER JESUS, denying his deity as almighty God.
You lie and claim to be tolerant and accepting to all beliefs but you hate God and hate Jesus the Son of God and you are another one world united nations stooge. Repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ before you end up burning in Hellfire forever.
Shiva is Satan and Krishna is burning in Hellfire. You need to stop worshipping apes and pigs and cows and monkeys and the Ganges River is full of feces urine dead bodies and poison and garbage.
Mr.Mushet,The whole of ur opinion is nothing but bullshit.Expressing ignorance is not a great thing. If I say ur religion is far far inferior and the Lord Christ was not a god and an ordinary human being it will show my intolerance. So being a Hindu I will not say that .My culture is to respect all religions and true to speak all religions are the creations of MAN.U have shown only ur mean culture ,because ur religion has taught u only to see others’ are satans.that is the inferiority of ur religion!!
Are you real? You look like a character of some apocalypse movie. The more I read so extremist speeches full of hatred and aggressiveness, the more I think of the poor innocent people in the four corners of the planet, including India, that get converted with this fearful speeches I wonder how the world still permits this VIOLENCE against the individuals and the cultures.
Mr. Mushet: this is called terror tactics through threats (of hell), exactly what Maria says. So less convincing your arguments are that you have to resort to use fear and threats for whoever doesn´t believe in what you believe, even using abuses to the author. It really looks pathetic and desperate. This is the love that your Jesus told you to spread to humanity? You are just portraying yourself with this aggresive image and giving a very poor image of your (intimidatory) religion.
Pls, you Christians who try to convert others, LEAVE THE WHOLE WORLD alone. Whoever wants to go to you, they will go freely. RESPECT THE FREEDOM OF PEOPLE TO CHOOSE THEIR OWN PATHS. You do not worry for our salvation or condemnation. IT IS NOT YOUR CONCERN. Understood?
Why don?t you write something about killing of muslim and Christians by hindus.write something about gujrat, muzzafarnagar,Bhagalpur, assam riots and killing of innocent muslims.you are just a false christian paid by hindus to write in favour of them.you must know that your so called innocent hindus always play victim card which they are not in reality.that bastard hindus even pay money to hindus to lure muslim girls.and still you say hindus are peace loving.
Asalam Walaikum wa rehmatullahi wa Barakatoh.
Wow brother, you look like a close follower of quran, hats of to you. See yourself, you are a muslim who is following a so called peaceful relegion all over the world.
So peaceful??????
Wait don?t tell me you haven?t even readed quran yet, omg, hahaha good. Mock or joke about our relegion if you want, do you know why, because we don?t give a damn about what you think, but we respect quran and Bible and their teachings.
Go and read quran and hadiths, they will teach you manner and will guide you to straight path.
I could not but laugh at your lack of knowledge about history of the world and India in particular.Hindus are normally peace loving. But don’t think that they should not retaliate for the terror they are facing from the so called Islamists ! 700 yrs of Mugal rule in India is enough to show the atrocities done on native Hindus. Yet Hindus did not driven out all the Muslims out of India when they got independence. They have got every right to do that because Muslims are given a separate nation ! Besides they are protected by govt after govt in the name of “minority”Not only protecting but given rights and privileges also !.Can u show any Muslim country which protects its minority ? The Islamic sharia law is allowed in this “secular” country !!. Did u know anything how China is treating Muslims ?? WHY THE WHOLE WORLD IS AGAINST ISLAMIC “IS” MOVEMENT ? U are a race to be condemned due to ur JIHADI concept !!
Better not to recommend reading the Quran. here is an example of a German Turk who read it and then wanted to join ISIS.
this article is based on an interview with him
https://mariawirthblog.wordpress.com/2015/07/12/can-we-be-honest-about-the-motive-of-isis-terrorists/
Because of some perverts, coverts in Hinduism,It is ridiculed by other religions.
Why an earth do you think that Hindus will jot be thrown in to hell of they will they will suffer all their life’s on the hell fire forever and ever and no one can save them you understand they are un believers they will never be forgiven what so ever because they have created the biggest sin in their life time ever that no one would ever do and that is worshiping statues that dont even mean anything and that are false so just shut up go and learn something about Islam first then post something about Islam on the internet don’t post things that are certainly not true fock off
Your opinion itself is the proof of your ignorance and culture.According to u whatever Quran and hadith say are correct and unquestionable. Who had given u the authority to decide who should live and who should die ? Abrahamic religions born only 2000 and odd years back but Hinduism(it is not a religion but a way of life with utopian principles)date back to 7000 yrs.The concept of Christ and Allah were not there when human beings born in this world. Then what is ur authority to dictate terms for others ? Islam is not the dictator ruler of this world to say that “they are un believers they will never be forgiven what so ever because they have created the biggest sin in their life time ever that no one would ever do and that is worshiping statues that dont even mean anything and that are false ”
You may not find meaning to idol worship because u don’t know even have an iota of knowledge about Hinduism. And who the hell are u to tell us which is true and which is false??Your wordings like “fock off”etc shows Islam’s culture. So you shut up and go and study Hinduism before “bla bla ” about anything.
First of all, Maria-ji, may I suggest that in regards to all your writings (they are enlightening, thought awakening and, superbly written for which several of us, especially those living outside of India, are grateful) there should be a reasonable time limit after which all comments should be closed. I say this because although some of us aren?t always reasonably prompt in reading/ absorbing/sharing the content of your more recent articles and/or adding any comments or seek clarifications – I am sure, for some, the ongoing expectation tends to be on eagerly looking forward to your newer posts in order to accumulate an understanding of all your articles (alongwith that of the many, many thoughtful comments) that adorn your blog.
Not only it is a question of timeliness for any comments that should be allowed to be made, you do not have the resources like the big and well-endowed media & journals to moderate and/or screen out any distasteful, vulgar and unacceptable comments like the one that has been made by this Zahra (Z) person.
The comment made by npnayar has, rightly, taken this Z-person to task in a more restrained and gentle manner. Please accept my sincere thanks and gratitude..
For me though, this Z man or woman, represents the scum of the scums of this earth. Not only does his/her comment show the worst side of the religion and the culture that s/he has so blindly embraced, it also is a depiction of the medieval backwardness, fanaticism and ongoing terrorism by numerous zealots, in their midst, radicalized by many competing & evolving brand name founders who have, over last 80 years, ravaged the gradual march to civility, democracy, peaceful co-existence, and hard earned equality for all concerned in every society in every corner of the world, and, of course, in that process, perpetrated pillage, land grab, murder, abduction, torture, sexual violence & trafficking, forced conversions, and destruction of places of worship of the kaffirs/ keffirs of this world.
I am sorry if I sound angry but I do feel that I have a right to be when I see such an ultra-toxic comment.
Thank u Mr.B.Bose. I know 90% of Muslim personals don’t have the courage to tell anything adversely about their religion! If any body does he will be prosecuted ! Their God is innocent.HE has not dictated anything.Only his prophets were the rule makers. They have very cleverly safeguarded their supremacy by these “unquestionable hadiths.” .It lacks humanity, kindness, tolerance etc etc. It suits people in stone age.!
Aleem Sheikh: You do not come to someone’s house and demand that your “orders” & “demands” be followed. Muslims worldwide by and large impose their will on others. Take “Halal” concepts for example – why do i have to eat halal to accommodate a Muslim. So i am being tolerant, i give in and in return – what did i get, a label “Kafir”? If you understand the meaning of words like humble, intelligent, “service to mankind”, etc.; Character is made from practice of this words. Muslims have failed miserably in the practice of mercy. Non of the Muslim countries allow any freedom or privileges that u are enjoying – to non Muslims. Take the example of Bangladesh. Please do some reading instead of crying that the whole world is against Muslim… During the Muslim rulers in India, millions of innocent people were slaughtered – just because they were Hindus or Sikhs. How are you going to pay for your ancestors atrocities? Awaiting your response…the accounts eventually need to be settled (Please note – i don’t mean an eye for an eye, I mean someone should own up and say sorry, be a man)
Kamlesh Jain: I was amused by your response and could not resist the temptation to ask you one question, as you seems to have read the Holy Koran and are presumably on the straight path with good manners. Question: If ALLAH really wants all humanity to follow Islam, I am pretty sure ALLAH can do it right? Historically, humans existed before Holy Koran came about and other faiths continue to flourish after Holy Koran came about. Just the other day, my Hindu friend told me his prayer was answered. I am really confused. Please enlightened me? or is ALLAH unable to make up his mind? therefore he recruited you (pan intended)
Zahra: You are right, the Hindu will be punished (no idea if Hell fire or not) but the same apply to a Muslim, the same law of God will apply for Justice. It cannot be that Muslim can rape an innocent girl and God say OK but the same offence done by Hindu – he gets punished. Unless you can proof that God actually has “sunat” and is a Muslim, so he acts in a brotherly fashion to Muslims. Lets make it simple…you get a Muslim to jump off a cliff and a Hindu do likewise. The law of Gravity will show no favours if you are a Muslim or Hindu. Therefore live your life as a good person (Muslim or Hindu) – that is what that matters and don’t let false prophets like Zakir tell you that Muslims can kill and rape and will still be loved by God – because Muslim are the Chosen ones. Your deeds are what counts…How you treat your parents, your neighbour, etc; nothing to do with race or religion.
?Islam is not any RELIGION, but a Gang of Criminals, Plunderers, Murderers, Rapists, Pedos :
And the Most Common : TERRORISTS :

2 ? TERRORISM IS PART OF ISLAM : ???you should know that Paradise is under the shade of swords.?? (Abu Dawud 2.2625, p.727) /??
3 ? TERRORISM IS PART OF ISLAM : Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to Allah?s Apostle and said, ?Instruct me as to such a deed as equals Jihad (in reward).? He replied, ?I do not find such a deed.? (Sahih Al-Bukhari 4:44) /??

Thank u Mr.MK. A religion calling to kill humans is barbaric .No right to live in this world !!
